hey all,

need help installing a modem PCi 56K
I have a pentium 200 MMX.
Just installed the PCI modem, when i boot up windows, it detects PCI and then asks for drivers. A box asks me , either i can let windows look for drivers or point directly to a location. The first way, W does not find it. If i point on the cd rom, to the exact directory, it doesz not seem to work.
It is a generic modem (on the box, just states Encore 56K fax modem PCI, the instructions inside seem to indicate it is a connexant modem. On the cd rom, it says if you have a connexant modem, to point to a path on the cd rom d/drivers/connexant/HSF/win 9X and then same path but with HCF .
I tried this, once i point to the path, windows says the correct files are not there.
I tried to select a new device to install , a modem, but i have no clue who makes connexant modems ...

It aint working, any clues what i could try

thanks

eli

Sounds like you have a software based modem. These types of modems require the drivers to be installed before the modem is physically installed.

Try the following, in exact order:

* Power down the computer.
* Remove modem.
* Reboot.
* Insert modem CD.
* Go the Run command and browse the CD for a setup.exe file. Choose to run that file. The system will ask you if you want to reboot. Choose NO.
* Power down. Install modem.
* Boot up and Windows should find the modem and load the drivers that you previously installed.

Try all that and post back with your progress.

thanks, last question,

i searched the cd rom, for set up files and got the following:

hfxsetup.exe (under connexant folder)

and setup.exe under lucent folder

thing is , i dunno which is mine, in the instrcutions manual it states connexant (lucent)

Any hints which one to try

Thanks

If the cd came with the modem, I would just run Setup.exe. If it is some other cd, say more about where it came from.

Sounds/looks like the setup is for the modem and the other may be for fax. Install both if you plan on using a fax.

The only other suggestion I have if everyones ideas don't work up to this point is, that I've had a prob like this before and here's how I fixed it (made it work anyway :rolleyes: ): For W98SE (maybe others):

When asked if you want Windows to find the drivers, select 'no I want to specify a location'. Click browse and go to Lucent, select 56K something along those lines (it's been awhile) and enter that. Windows will kick back that these are not the right drivers, click use anyway. I probably ended up going that route because I didn't install in the proper order but it worked. It should be fine if you don't plan on faxing or using a voice feature if so equipped.
