Is your drive compressed? Did the "somehow" involve running FDISK or something like Partition Magic?

To check for compressed drive:

Restart your computer.
For Win98 press and hold down the CTRL key
For Win95 press and hold down the F8 key.
When the Startup menu appears, choose Command Prompt Only.
At the DOS C: prompt, type scandisk c: (including the space) and then press Enter
If ScanDisk prompts to check the host drive first, the drive is compressed.

---------------------

If there is no compression, and if you do not have a program like Partition Magic, you will have to get one if you want to avoid re-formatting. If you don't want to get one, you'll have to save your data and start over with FDISK.
