I posted this earlier but will try again

The basic layout of my system is

AMD 400mhz
64m of memory
10G hard drive
48X CD rom.

It was put together over 2 years ago by a
friend that is no longer available for help.
It originally had a 40X CD rom that worked
for over a year when it started to disappear
from the system for no reason then show up again.
When it reappeared it would sometime work and
other times the message the drive is not
accessible, the device is not ready would be
given. It was at this point I replaced it
with the 48X CD rom which worked fine until
about a month ago. Now the same problem
is happening again. No other new hardware
has been added other than the 48X. Everything
else works fine. I changed the CD-Rom from Slave
with the harddrive to its on IDE channel, I also
switched out all of the cables. I really would
like to try and fix this myself rather than take
it in for service because I plan to try to upgrade
the system myself so suggestions would be appreciated.

Both the 40X and 48X are Delta

No offense intended, but Delta's are pretty 'low-end' and problems with them are fairly common.
If the second unit is still under warranty, I'd recommend taking it back for replacement.
If not, can you put it in another system, maybe a friend's, to see if it works there?

No offence, I agree with TJAY, Delta cd-rom's are pretty bad. I've seen many instances, they just quit working after a while.
My suggestion, if you can not get a free replacement, get a good brand cd-rom. Toshiba, Teac etc

I have had alot of problems with cdroms, and have had to
replace them often. I usually have to add a new one about
every year. I just wear the old one out. This is probably
your problem. A new one is usually recognized by the system
on boot.
