Very curious about how often you really have to change the initialization strings for a modem.I know it is done but what is the
rule of thumb,if any for doing this?Also what are the various commands and when are they applied? I need to bone up on this topic and would like to know more.

AFAIK, modem init strings would only need to be changed if you needed to access another type of service:- ie, a different speed, parity or similar. Any change could render your current setup unusable.
