I have a .exe file infected by a trojan virus. I have used norton antivirus 2001 with the latest update to locate it. However norton cannot repair the file and it cannot deleted it as it is being used by windows and it wont allow it.

Is it worth trying a different antivirus program?

What can I do?
Thanks heaps for you attention

You can, but any program you load into the system now has the same potential for infection and maybe useless. I would take it into a decent repair shop and see what they can do.

If Norton Antivirus can't fix or repair it...then I'd say its lost. Sorry man.

Someone else may have better insight than myself, on this situation.

Don't think this is a 'repair shop' problem' yet, probably not at all.

Does Norton report the name of the file? If so, what is it?

If you just want to "Delete" the file, do it at a DOS prompt at boot up....Get a floppy - format it with "system files only" - at the "C" prompt type in cd and the EXACT directory the file is in type: del_ (underscore is a space)file name....it might look like this:
C:cd\Windows\system ...then hit enter
C:<Windows\System> del poopyvir.exe
Then it will be gone.

hehe yepper Randy http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

or if you are like me and don't know much about DOS, (depending on) what this is using.. you say that it can't be deleted because it's in use.

If it is something you can do without (temporarily) you can disable it from starting at boot using msconfig.

start, run, Type in msconfig and press enter or click ok, then go to Start Up TAB, find the program thats the problem, and uncheck it from running at boot up.

re-boot.

make sure that since you have not told us what program or file it is affecting, to keep a copy of it just in case..(on a floppy) or at least have it identified, so that you can get an uncorrupted version of it, if you require it.

above is assuming that you are using win98se.

ps- good to see you here Randy.. !!!! hows the move ??

very GOOD!!

I knew the DOS way too, but am not as good (or sure) about how to explain that) as I am in windoze.

glad you at least got that part done..

had you ran msconfig, to see if there was anything else loading from start that you were unaware of??
