I push the power button, the cooler starts and nothing else. The screen is black. No beep. Nothing http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif Most of the time it works fine and then I get a nasty surprise. It happens more and more often. I cannot turn it off afterwards. I have to unplug it at the back.
I really don't know what to do.
The computer has an IBM DTTA 351010 disk,
the motherboard is Chain Tech 6 BTA2 Intel BX chipset. The OS is Windows ME.
Everyone I asked is guessing. I sent it to be repaired and it returned as it is http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif
Please help

I'm afraid any of us that can really be of assistance will need more information to resolve your problem(s)....what you describe as the "cooler" is located where? Do you have the computer opened up to see the cpu cooler inside the cpu box or are you speaking of the fan in the back of the computer that you are describing as the cooler? Does the computer come on correctly some of the time or never?
The two most common occurances when the fan in the BACK of the computer comes on(if that is what is happening) and no beeps occur and a black screen is all you get are: 1. Your RAM is defective or 2. Your video card has failed........those are the two things I would have the "repair" place test first when you return it to them!

I'm going to read between the lines here a bit and guess that you mean the power supply fan starts up (its the one in back of the case) but nothing else happens...if that is the case, then there are two most likely culprits: 1. You have defective RAM or 2. You have a bad video card
I would take it BACK to the repair guy and specifically ask him to troubleshoot those two items FIRST! If it is not either of those two items, then you can have them move to other things like the cpu, mobo, power supply etc. On second thought, you might want to consider a different technician than the last one you went to.......this is pretty elementary stuff as far as troubleshooting goes. Woops......I didnt think the last post made it ......so this is somewhat of a duplication http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

The computer works most of the time then it just won't turn on. Once in a few days. I asked around ant I was told that technicians hate those computers that work some of the time and some don't. I don't have too many technicians to choose from. They told me to buy a new computer. I am not in the US at the moment. I am on my own.
It's the fan that turns on. I mixed the two terms.
I have 3 RAM modules. 3X 32 MB PC 100
One is old and the other two are new. If it's the RAM then it must be the old one. But how to recognize it?
The graphic card is new. I think the problem existed before it was installed but it happened only a couple of times then so I'm not sure.
My Bios is AWARD modular Bios v. 4.51 PG October 1998.
I hope I don't have to flash it.
Video Bios Shadow is enabled.
System Bios Cacheable
Video Bios Casheable
Video RAM casheable are all enabled. In my papers they "should" be disabled.
Someone mentioned Advanced Power Management.
I disabled Load power profile and the Advanced power management. I even tried to disable Energy Star settings but I wasn't too successful.
I really tried everything.
Thank you for answering.

I forgot to mention that I can hear the hard disk starting to turn (for a second or two) and then it all stops.
