My sound card is part of a motherboard, and one day it just stopped functioning. I tried to uninstall and reinstall it, but when I came back to install it again, Windows would not reciognize that there was any sound hardware. The sound on my computer does not work. I've been through the windows troubleshooter and have come up inconclusive. It simply won't show up under system devices.
please help

A little more system info would be helpful;

What kind of machine/MOBO?

Processor, memory other configuration details

Recent installs/uninstalls

Check in the BIOS setup to see if "onboard audio" or AC97 (98) is enabled, if it is you may want to look on the manufacturers website for updated drivers (they are some times a self-extracting self-executing package that will detect the audio). If it is disabled then try enabling and see if Windows finds it, also boot into safe mode (hit <f8> at boot up to get the menu and choose "safe mode"), then go into device manager and remove all the items under "Sound, game controllers..."

Since you have the system Cd then you've got the source for the drivers, if after rebooting it asks for where they are point it to the CD....

I'm having a similar problem with my own machine, except mine is an intermittent problem. I think something is wrong w/ VIA website because I haven't been able to access any drivers there.(In my case, linked to FIC website) Stay on this problem if you please everyone, I'm looking for this too!

Remove the sound card from Device Manager in Safe Mode, and remove ALL sound cards shown if more than one is listed. Reboot and try it again. If it still doesn't find it, chances are the sound chip is gone, you'll then have to figure out how to disable onboard sound either in BIOS or by a jumper or both, and install a sound card.
