View Full Version : Do new power supply's require a break-in period ?

I just replaced my old generic 250w with an Enermax 350w dual-fan power supply. During the first 15 min or so my display was dropping color, as in the red would drop out, come back, then the blue etc. I fired up the Asus SmartDoctor utility that came with my Geforce GTS 32mb card. It showed that the AGP bus voltage was fluctuating between 3.39 and 3.41v. After awhile the display problems seemed to go away, even though the AGP bus voltage continued to rise and fall.
I have to assume that the Enermax is a higher quality, more stable PS than the old (3yrs) supply so I'm wondering if the video glitches were just the other components "adjusting" themselves to the new unit ? Or is that way off ? I really hope this supply is going to work-out, I bought it as the first step in a planned upgrade to an Athlon system so it has to deliver the goods.
Any thoughts are appreciated.

PII 400
Asus Geforce GTS 32mb
PC 100 Ram
Fujitsu 20gb DMA 66 HD

I'm kind of surprised. Enermax has a very good reputation, but it's always possible to get a bad one.
How close is your system box to the monitor? If you can, separate them further.
If the problem goes away, I'd say you got a 'leaky' one, with defective shielding or a 'hot' component.
If so, this problem will not go away by itself, but instead probably just get worse.
'Breaking in' is not something that should be necessary at all.
EDIT -- Does your monitor cable have one of those ferrite 'donuts' on it?

I think it does have the "donut" your talking about. The cable has a large "cylinder" inline with the cable, about 1 inch from the video card connector. Sound like your "ferrite donut" ? What might this have to do with the problem ? I've got to say, the problem hasn't show it's face again tonight. It's been about 3 hrs since the first power-up with the new PS. It was just the video glitches for aprox 15min, now it's gone. Weird. Any chance it could be MB or CPU related ? That wouldn't be so bad, since I plan to upgrade both in the next few weeks.
Thanks for the help.

No, on the contrary, the donut is a good thing, helping to shield the cable from RF interference.
If the PS itself is in fact 'noisy' -- causing interference -- it could get worse.
The UL and other standards are meant to prevent this. Maybe yours was just built on a Monday. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif
If it's not a major hassle to return, I would. What you're planning to upgrade to may be even more sensitive.
