Hey all! My BIOS can tell me the temperature of my system and my CPU. How does it do this. Are there tiny temp. sensors somewhere on the motherboard or something?

Yes there are and you can download software to tell you what they say without having to boot into bios.

I would look in www.pcworld.com for their free downloads, but others may already know of good programs. If you have the install disk for your mobo, it may already have a program on it to do this.

i just started using a temp monitoring proggie called "motherboard monitor 5", or "mbm5", and i like it a lot. it's got tons of features, like telling you your cpu speed, your fan speeds, and the temps of your cpu, among some of the other motherboard components. it's pretty easy to figure out, for the most part. as far as ive figured out, which is likely one of the most important things to get out of this proggie, is that winbond2 is the cpu temp sensor (at least for my mobo). i think that winbond1 is the sensor for the northbridge, but i could be wrong. you'll be able to monitor your cpu fan speed, and depending whether you have one or not, you should be able to monitor your northbridge fan speed as well. another good thing about this proggie is that you can set alarms for the different sensors, so if your cpu starts to get too hot, an alarm will go off. you can set an alarm for your fan speeds as well, so if lets say your cpu fan craps out on you, you'll know, possibly before your cpu gets hot enough to trigger the alarm, that way you can replace the fan beofre any possible damage is done. anyway, here's the link if youre interested:

just click downloads at the header bar, and you can get it from there. :)
