Win98 S/E, At random times whenever I click connect to activate my dial-up my computer reboots.I replaced the PCI modem with a ISA and it seems to have cleared it up. Also sometime ago I tried replacing the AGP with a PCI card and with the PCI modem installed the computer would not even show a picture. Removed the modem and sys booted up OK. Wondering if there is a problem with my PCI bus??

Thanks

Ok....

An ISA modem is most likely a hardware modem, so there is less of a chance for other factors to cause problems, like a software conflict with the drivers, too many resources being used, etc.

That said, most often the causes of spontaneous reboots are power, heat or memory problems...

If your reboot problem occurs when you have more than one item hooked to the PCI bus then I would lean toward a power problem, although heat is not out of the question.

So some more specs are in order....find the size of your power supply (in Watts output), how many devices you have connected (drives, cards, etc), type of motherboard and chipset......

Thanks mjc for the reply, reference power problem would this be the power supply unit or other sources of power problems.I know of one other computer that would not boot with a modem attached to the PCI bus. That person had to use a external modem in order to use her computer.

Thanks
