Hey, I just ordered a new 1.2 ghz amd thunderbird w/ K7VZA motherboard to upgrade my computer. I also got a new case and 300watt atx power supply for it. Everything finally came in yesterday so I assembled it all but can't solve a quirky boot problem. I have two different dimms, one 128mb and one 256mb.
When I turn the computer on everything responds like a normal boot except for the moniter doesnt at all. Also, there are continuous beeps when I turn it on except for one instance. There are 3 dimm slots on the motherboard. If I put the 128mb dimm in the 1st dimm slot then there are no beeps, but the moniter still doesn't respond. Then if I put the 256mb in the same slot the beeps start again.
Anyways, I've tried everything I can think of including taking the whole motherboard out of the case and trying it. I do have experience with assembling comps but Ive run out of ideas. I've checked the processor/ram/etc to no avail. I begining to think the motherboard is a dud but wanted to see if anyone else could think of anything I didn't. Any help is appriciated!! Thanks

Welcome, Tekk! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

There is a good step-by-step Troubleshooting Guide right here (http://www.pcguide.com/ts/index.htm). Good Luck! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

I forgot to mention that when I take out the ram completly I get the same pattern of beeps, but longer and more spead out. So I guess that it detects the ram but I don't understand why the beeps stop in that one specific situation(128 in dimm1). I don't know if this makes a difference to you but thought I'd throw it in. Thanks

Did you click that first link?

Click here (http://www.pcguide.com/ts/x/sys/beep/index.htm) for help with interpreting BIOS beep codes.

Yea, I went through all that but it didn't really tell me anything I didn't already know. I'm pretty sure I'm gonna just have to get them to replace the motherboard/processor.

I think I've discovered the first airborne computer virus because now my friends computer which has just been sitting in my room is doing the same thing for no reason. The moniter just doesn't respond. Now he's going to blame me for breaking his comp....this is turning into a really bad day..Thanks for the help though

If you are positive that both puters are acting funny in the SAME way I would check the power situation in that room. Just a thought http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
