I have an 8 week old Sony G420 19" monitor. After doing a degauss (which it didnt really need) I now have a light green shading through the top third. Subsequent degauss has cleared it a little. Should I continue or is there another solution?

Graham
Try another monitor on your computer:
-No green shading? RMA your Sony.
-Green shading? Make sure the video card is firmly seated, does not raise out of its slot when the hold down screw is installed, try a different video card.

The problem is associated with the monitor alone. The display card has nothing to do with it. Try degaussing it a couple more times. Frequent degaussing will damage the coils. If the green shades still persists, replace the monitor.:(
It's always best to use the process of elimination to be sure of the cause of a problem.
Actually I would call around to a couple of local TV shops and see how much it would cost if you brought it in an had them do a "professional" degauss on it....the degaussing coil that is built into most monitors is not really strong enough to handle severe problems.
If after running the degauss on it only being 8 weeks old and ending up with strange color problems, it sounds like the built in coil is out of alingnment or not working propelry...so you may want to consider RMAing it anyway......

Thanks for the suggestions. I have actually sourced the problem to an old speaker that I had a TV monitor standing on. As I moved the speaker around the monitor I could see various colors moving with it. I probably set it off with the first degauss I did as it didnt have any effect up until that point.

Oops.....with the speaker gone a good degauss should clear it up.........
also most modern monitors will autmatically degauss during the power on cycle (from a fully powered down state and at least 1/2 four between attempts) so just running it and shutting it off may eventually clear it up.

mjc is right, as usual. Everything you need to know about degaussing is explained in this article:

While I was reading this thread, I realized that I, too, have a monitor in storage with the same problem. I thought it was just broken so I put it with the rest of our junk. I'll have to go get it out and have some TV shop degauss it.
