Welcome aboard krishna! :)

1.You can ofcourse boot your laptop from an external HDD. You have to change the boot sequence in the BIOS to make this effective.
2.Any brand of HDD would work.
3.The system will be slow than before.

My laptop seems to be able to use USB without first booting into Windoze, I suspect it is set up this way because laptops tend to use externals more. I don't know if it would work with external HD though. I also don't get why computer makers don't just make USB default and start producing keyboard, mouse and so on with USB default.

Oh well...

Please tell me your not thinking of running a primary HDD via USB??? The end of the world would come quicker ;)

I can see the benefit of running an additional HDD for storage of docs, media etc.. but I wouldnt run like Windows via USB. Can you imagine what she would do if you accidently removed a device without asking...it be like removing your brain and not being ready ;)
