No replies to previous post. Doesn't anyone have any ideas?
Hello everyone.
I'm having a problem with my computer when I try to warm boot. It doesn't happen all the time but about 8 times out of 10. When directed to restart the comp. goes to the screen with the company logo and freezes. I don't get the beep either. Sometimes a ctrl-alt-del will make it boot, other times I have to use the power switch. This does not appear to be a Windows problem, because it has carried over from ME through a reformat and install of 98SE. I don't know alot about the Bios settings or CMOS so if anyone could try to talk me through this I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance.
Specs:
HP 4535
Intel Celeron 400mghz
191mb ram
Video and built in (does not use pci card)
Riptide audio
HP9510 Cdrw (was acting up before this was installed)

Just noticed the 'HP' part.
Was the 'downgrade' from Me to 98SE done with an HP restore CD?
Click Here (http://www.pcguide.com/ts/x/boot/quick.htm) for some help with troubleshooting boot problems. Good Luck! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Hi tj. Thanks for the reply. Yes the "downgrade" was made with the system restore disc. However, the problem had started with ME. That was one of the reasons for the return to 98SE. I thought that the problem was maybe being caused by the operating system. I used the reformat and restore option on that by the way. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Not sure why reported RAM is 191M instead of 192. May be HP peculiarity.
My advice on BIOS settings:
Enter BIOS setup utility, usually by pressing the [delete] key during boot -- may be different key(s) for HP.
Look for an option like "Load Default Values" or similar.
Highlight or otherwise select it.
Select, or press the specified key, to Save and Exit. If asked "Are You Sure", answer Yes.
Let the boot continue.
Then check to see if the problems are still there.
If so, click that troubleshooting link and work your way through the steps.
Good luck. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

Thanks TJ http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
I will try your advice as soon as I am able. As you can see, by the time it takes me to reply. I don't get to the computer as much as I would like to. I have a pretty demanding job that keeps me very busy. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif Not to mention a teenage son who is SERIOUSLY into computers. Most of the time I have to pry him off with a 6 ft crowbar! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif Anyway, I will post back when I find out more and/or fix this thing. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif Thanks TJ.
It would appear that resetting the default values in the BIOS did the trick. I appreciate the help very much. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/cool.gif
