hi all...

This is more of a general question. My laptop, dell latitude D2-66xt with a neomagic magicgraph 128zv+ video card, displays all fonts poorly. They look really scratchy and a bit dis-jointed. I've used a few different drivers but it always looks the same after reboot. When I plug any monitor into the laptop everything looks like a million bucks. Go back to the laptop screen and it looks crappy again. Right now I've ruled out the video card/software but I'm wondering if the laptop screen is ready to retire. Any thoughts?

thanx

Did this problem just start? Some laptop displays are really good at one resolution and really crappy at any other...if you just changed the res. that is something to check...

Not to pick on just your laptop, but most of them look "crappy" when compared to a CRT. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

That's just the nature of the beast, and a trade-off for portability.

You can try other fonts used by Windows:

Start > Settings > Control Panel > Display > Appearance, and click the arrow for the Item box.
For listed items where the Font box is enabled, you can select a different one and/or make it bold.

yeah it just started doing this about a week ago...I've tried all the standard tweaks and whatnots plus a handful of drivers. I had to do a reinstall of the o/s eventually so I decided this was a good time. After all said and done still no change. Looks great on my monitor but pretty substandard on the LT screen...more than it should be. And the beat goes on.

I notice you reply a lot to my questions so thanx for taking the time to read them.

What is the resolution of the screen and what resolution are you running?

How many colors?

BTW - laptop screens cannot adjust to resolutions like monitors - some reduce the screen area (you'll have a black border around the edges or it will stretch the screen (which is likely to be happening).

I'm not familiar with that laptop but the video card is good so I suspect the screen is 1024x768 - just a guess though.
