Before my time is done on this planet, I vow to have something posted on each of these boards. At the rate I'm going, that may just be true. Anyway.

Don't see it as much of a problem as an inconvienece, but I bought a new DVD ROM and installed it on the older computer that I've been working on. It came up with an error, ATAPI incompatible, and then gave me the option of continuing. I went into BIOS and changed the configuration to auto and solved this problem. Not sure if this is what I should do so I thought that I would check here. The second thing is that now the drive LED light is constantly on. Kinda strange. The last thing is that when I played DVDs, they would perform really bad, or more like just really glitchy. Now onto something different. Because of this problem I changed the drives over. I was using the old drive from the old computer for the new computer. I figured that maybe it has something to do with performance even though there was no problem with the old drive. I changed these out and now have the new drive in the new computer with the same problems popping up. I don't know about the performance as of yet, and am going to feel really stupid if this didn't change anything, but I guess I will find out. Thank for the help as always.

Don't know if this changes anything, but I just checked in "My Computer" and it shows the DVD Drive as a removeable drive. I'm sure this has something to do with the fact that I had it auto config.

Allright, let me apologize. It seems that I have been doing this lately also and I'm sorry. I get stuck at a part and then find something else or think of something else that allows me to move on. It seems that the drive was set as slave instead of master when it came from the factory. I wasn't use to this and checked it out. Guess it makes a difference when it's on it's own IDE cable. Just switched the jumper and everything seems to be working fine now. Thanks everyone, even though I know no one responded, but thanks for putting up with me since I seem to do this all the time. With some luck I hope that it at least helps some people out who may be having the same problem.

No, this is a good thing. No need to apologize.

I think in some cases it doesn't matter if you jumper a single drive on an IDE cable as master or slave. In this case it seemed to make a difference. So we all learned something.

Thanks for posting back.

Well thanks very much. Glad that I gave some information out rather then just wasting space. Thanks again.

While you're at it, check to make sure the IDE cable is oriented correctly.

Pin 1, or usually a red stripe on one side of the cable, always goes towards the molex power connector. A drive's light that stays on continuously indicates that the Pin 1 side of the cable is on in reverse.

Not sure if the dang thing would even work if this is the case, but it won't hurt to check it.

Took me a bit longer to reply to this then I wanted to, but I've been a bit busy unfortunately. The IDE cable that I have can only be put in one way so that wasn't the problem. Not really sure as to why the light stayed on. Not sure why the the slave setting would make it do this. Strange.

CD/DVD drives always come out of the box set as slave for some strange reason. I forget to check that quite often, and have to take a drive back out to change it since usually I can't reach the jumpers...

It doesn't seem to make much sense to me, since most new computers I've seen have the CD ROM on a separate IDE channel by itself, and most hard drives come pre-set as Master...

Go figure...
