Here's the situation...I'm running an old 200mhz computer at work. We've had nothing but problems running it. We've already invested a couple hundred dollars in it for tech fixing. The problem now is that after having just installed Office 97 Pro, it tells me I don't have enough memory to run windows, then tells me to remove programs from the resident memory, or from Config.sys or Autoexec.bat. We have 64mb of RAM, and hardly anything installed on the machine, outside of Win98se. It will run Windows in safe mode, but not in regular mode. The techies say that it can't be the RAM, but what then? Please help!!

I am guessing that it really has enough memory to run Windoze, but it doesn't have enough to run Windoze with Office 97 installed. Rather than spending a couple hundred bucks more, I would look at upgrading. If it is an ATX case, you could upgrade to a much faster AMD chip and even quadruple your memory for less that $200.
If it is an AT case, your options are considerably more limited. Do you have the option of adding more memory? You can pick up 128M RAM for as little at $8 after rebate these days. One stick of that would probably solve your problem. Post back with more details about the system if you need more detailed help.

Oh, one other thought, you could try removing memory resident programs by unchecking them in msconfig, but you will probably still need to upgrade a bit to get it working really well.

Hi,
If you are only running windows 98se and office pro 97 I can not see why you would have any problems with the memory.
The reason I think this, is because I support a small network of clients who I have seen running windows 98Se and office 2000 pro on their similar spec computers, admitately they are not the fastest computers in the world but it shows it can be done.
If I was you I would be looking for applications running in the background of windows which are taking up memory resources. Start by doing "Crtl + Alt + delete" and seeing how many tasks are currently running when all your applications are running. And use the built in windows system monitor to check physical memory and processor usuage.
Like the previous post states, we would nearly need more information about the computer concerned before we could be anymore help. Try to include details like, list of software installed, computer spec, etc.
To summarise, I would start to do a bit of troubleshooting/investigation work to find out what is using the memory/cpu.

Win 98Se requires a minimum of 24MB
Office 97 Pro requires 8MB per individual application running
As mentioned, check Ctrl+Alt+Del and see what else is running.
You might want to check HERE (http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist.htm) and see what's what and if it's necessary.
What you might also want to do is START>PROGRAMS>ACCESSORIES>SYSTEM TOOLS>SYSTEM INFORMATION
Check on Available Physical Memory...do this before you knowingly open any application.

Well here's the latest on my computer problem. When I came into work on Monday to try to fix the machine, it was gone! In it's place was a Dell P3 500. So much for trying to save the boss some money!! Thanks for the advice though I really did appreciate it! -bschears

Probably did save some money.... in maintenance costs. A P3 500 will probably give you a lot less hassle. How much RAM does this one have?

I think only 64 mb...uh oh....
This new machine is giving problems too...We are trying to run a program called Cash Register Express 2000, but not having much luck, and it won't let me run a labeling printer by Brother called the P-touch 1500. Same day, different problems...that's life.
