I am having a problem getting my system past POST during the BOOT process. There is no memory count, the motherboard does not respond (go into the BIOS when the "DEL" key in pressed. All that I get is the intial screen after power up which shows the Type of BIOS, CPU Information and REV stuff at the bottom. I have checked the connections and removed all unnecessary periphials. Still no joy. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif Do I need to get a diagnostic utility tool to read the errors as it boots? If so how do I get it? Help
My specs are:
ABIT BH6 Motherboard
256 MB PC100 SDRAM
Intel Celeron 600 MHz CPU

The most COMMON three reasons you cant "post-up" a new system are 1. RAM is not seated correctly or is defective(even new ram comes defective) 2. Incorrectly seated or bad video card & 3. Jumper or motherboard "soft menu" settings are incorrect. If you have checked and rechecked those three things then you go to the power supply and motherboard as the problems....then the cpu itself.
Since you are getting a screen showing you something....it's not likely to be the vid card.

If you have checked everything Randy_tx suggested, then one more thing you can try is reseting your
motherboard. Usually there is jumper you can set to clear CMOS in your MB. Read the manual, that should show you which jumper to set to clear CMOS. After clearing CMOS put the jumper back to normal setting and try to boot system.
Let us know how it goes.

Okay - Here's my update. I have taken the system apart and performed a basis run-up using just the cpu, ram, video card and of course the MB. I received the following on the screen.

AWARD BIOS v4.51PC (SYS BIOS)
GREEN AGP/PCI/ISA SYSTEM (VIDEO CARD INFO)
-MMX CPU at 98MHz (CELERON PROCESSOR-Needs to be changed in Bios Setup)
Press "DEL" to enter SETUP
07/10/1998 i440bx - w83977-2A69KALEC-FL

I believe this is the correct BIOS startup Screen. At least its the way the PC GUIDE, BIOS System Boot Operations section desribes it. However
there was no memory count. Could my RAm be a problem? My CPU is a Celeron 600MHz for a 66MHz system I even attempted to clear the CMOS. I don't know if I did it right. The jumper was moved to the clear (discharge) position. The system was powered down before the jumper was moved. Do I put power on after moving the jumper? I tried but the system would not respond. I placed the jumper back in the NORMAL position and when power was re-applied the system came on. There was no change however to the problem. What do I do next? http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif Is there some dianostic software I can get to help? Of course I can't get you guys as software versions can I? http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

I think Paleo Pete download will be out in June, Randy_TX will be avialable in August...... http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

I would try it with one stick of RAM (if you've got two 128MB sticks) or check the RAM in a known working machine.

Either your present BIOS version is not capable of supporting that CPU, or you need to change a jumper on the mobo. In any case, your system is obviously "confused" if it's reporting a Celeron @ 98Mhz. Check the Abit web site (http://www.abit-usa.com) for some info and upgrades.

I already have a upgrade from ABIT that will support the CPU. My question is this How do I apply that upgrade to a system that will not get past the POST?

Are you sure you have the keyboard plugged into the correct PSII keyboard connector in back........you should be plugged into the one on the right as you look down from above. It sounds like you are gettng no response from the keyboard by your posts and this could be the reason.

You need to boot from a diskette containing only the DOS start-up files, the BIOS flash program, and the BIOS update -- usually a .BIN file. There should be instructions on the Abit site. I noticed that there are two versions of the BH6 board, so make sure you have the correct BIOS file. If you don't have a manual, you can get one in their download section.

Randy,
Yes I checked, Rechecked and checked the rechecker who checked the check to make triply sure the Keyboard was plugged into the proper port. Just to let you know I took the motherboard, cpu and ram in to the service center I bought the equipment from to have them checked for operability. I'll let you know what they say. Thank you guys in advance for all of your prompt support and ideas. I've learned quite a bit about motherboards
and other stuff, I didn't know before. Hats off to you and TJaymadison :^) (you listening TJ?) especially. I'll keep in touch so you'll know exactly what happens. That way you can help the next novice PC builder. That's all for now.

Thanks

Well, it doesn't really seem like we helped quite enough, if you still had to take it in. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif Hope it's nothing too serious or expensive. Ask them a lot of questions when you pick it up, so you can fix it yourself next time, if it should happen again. Let us know here too, so we can all learn. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

Well, here's my update. As I returned to get my system from the service center I thought to myself "I could have saved my 29.00 bucks". The service center checked everything but the motherboard, like they were asked. It got to be so frustrating that I had to drop in on the manager to register my displeasure. In any event, I have contacted the Manufacturer and requested a Updated Flash BIOS chip. I believe that is the culprit, just as TJayMadison stated. Everything else was tried.

Bye

Hey Guys,
Just to let you all know I finally got my PC up and running. It 3was the Bios chip that needed to be upgraded with the latest update. I am presently running my system (Celeron 600MHz)overclocked at 750 MHz. I intend to make it it at least to 900MHZ. I've put a case fan to help with the cooling and expect to get to 900MHZ within the month. Thanks guys for all of your help and I will be checking in from time to time, to seek your wisdom. Have a great summer.

Bye.
