Hi,
I have a desktop (that I assembled using parts bought online), which has 1.5 GHZ, 512 MB ram, and pentium 4 processor. It has windows 2000 loaded on it.
Uptil a few days ago it was working absolutely fine. However, now whenever I restart my machine it goes through the bios check, starts windows 2000, but after 5 mins it just freezes. Sometime, during the booting process it freezes. I am puzzled why this is happening and what could be the contributing factors.

Could anyone please give me suggestions as to why this is happening? Is it that the bios is faulty (which should not be the case since it checks the bios during the booting process and indicates that everything is fine), or is that windows 2000 is crashing the computer, or is that the temperature in the room is high enough to initiate this locking, or is that there is some virus in my computer which locks the computer (i ran norton anitvirus, etc softwares for virus check and found nothing) ????

Thanks
Meghna.

If it locks up sometimes when first turning it on then it's probably not from overheating. Some MB's have a BIOS that will tell you the CPU temp, and shut it down if it's too hot.

What motherboard do you have?

Might be the power supply. 300watts is probably a minimum for your system.

Check your memory with DocMem (it's free):

Or it could be from Win2K.
