i am running win 98 on a 300 mhz celeron, with pretty recently upgraded ram to about 160 megs. the computer shuts down fine (actually, it used to shut down without displaying "now safe..." but now it displays that before it shuts the power -- i dont know which is better), and it cold boots fine. but everytime i choose restart instead of shut down from the start/shutdown menu, it does scandisk on boot up. i have no idea what the problem is, but it started about the same time as when i installed a pascal compiler. any ideas? ah 'preciate yow help.

Try going into msconfig (type msconfig in the Run box) -> starup tab uncheck everything and reboot, if it doesn't happen then start putting checks back in one at a time, rebooting after each one until it happens....it may be that the PASCAL compiler has its own cache and it is not empty when you reboot, check the options in the compiler...

i unchecked everything in the startup tab and it still gives me the same problem -- makes sense because this doesnt happen from cold boots, but only happens when i select restart from the start menu. and, i forgot http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif to tell you, but normally, at the beginning of the boot up, the computer counts the ram and gives me a message along the lines "160000 bytes of NVRAM". but upon software-mediated restart, it doesnt give me this message; rather the cursor blinks for a very short time and then the boot continues.
thanks for your help. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/cool.gif

Alot of systems skip the memory check on a restart.

Does it do it when you restart coming out of "Safe Mode"?

Are you running the original 98 or 98se? If you have the original you may have the "Disable fast shutdown" option in msconfig -> advanced, try checking it.

Welcome, fideleus! Always nice to see some Latin references in the forums. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Actually, displaying the shutdown message is better. It allows any
delayed cache writes to be completed before Windows closes shop.
