I just built a screamin new system and I'm having problems, First The hardware... AMD Athlon 1.33ghz. w/266fsb, Asus A7M266 mb, 256mb PC2100 Micron Memory, Enlight Case with 400watt sparkle power supply, 40gb WD 7200 rpm ata100 hdd, Creative Sound Blaster Live platinum w/live drive audio card, Creative 12xdvd 48x cdrom, 8X 4X 32X cdrw, creative Nvidia Gforce2 GTS video card w/64 meg DDR ram...thats about it.
Now the problem..the system runs fine until i run Norton AntiVirus or MS Scandisk...it gives me a BSD and tuirns the data on the hdd into scrambled eggs, in other words...i lose me data. nothing like this has ever happened to me before.
the only trouble with all this hardware is, the mb has onboard audio and it wont disable, so I have another on the way now.....could something so small delete the data on me hdd?
sometimes it only turns the whole partition into 3or4 files BIG files with machine code for names ....HELP !!!

Does sound like a screamer, but what OS are you running?

Have you tried it without the SB card?

What BIOS version?

What version of Norton?

Do you have the latest BIOS and chipset upgrades?
Are you using an ATA-100 80-wire data cable?

If so, it then sounds like an IDE controller or timing issue.

Yes I have the latest/only bios available, I even flashed it to make sure it was all there, the chipset is the amd 761 set, no updates available yet, all this is brand new it seems, lucky me !
I am also using the 80 wire cable for ata100......if it is the ide controller will a new mb solve this ?
if it's timing what does that entail exactly, I've never heard of timing being an issue ?

I'd check the Asus site again, there is a BIOS update listed 6/5/2001...yesterday, it doesn't list what it does but at this point I think its worth a shot.
