On my pc whenever i dial up to the internet - if the settings are set to wait for dialtone - it will not connect. It says that there is no dial tone. If i change this then 6 times out of ten it will dial out and connect. The other times it will give that BT announcement message saying please try again.
This is very annoying, there is nothing wrong with the line as another computer i have, using another modem works fine. It seems as though there maybe a problem with the modem. Any ideas? what settings can i change? why doesnt it pick up the dialtone?
The modem is a netodragon internal 56k pci modem, on a 1.1ghz duron pc.
Another annoying little thing is that when i click on the dial up connection icon and it eventually dials and connects, about half way through another dial up connection box comes up saying select the services you wish to connect to. If i close this box then it disconnects my original connection!! any help would be most appreciated.
thanks

It sounds like you may have more than one driver installed for your modem. You could try booting into Safe Mode and checking drivers in Device Manager to see if there are any extra. If so, you may want to Remove all of them and then reinstall the drivers for the modem. If not, hang on and someone else will have a better idea....
Budfred
Going to give you the same adivce I just gave another poster......
Grab Spybot Search and Destroy (AV link in my sig...), it may have picked up something, also Hijack This (same place for link......)
Post the log from Hijack this (save and then open it in notepad and cut and paste it here), then go to the config button in HT and then misc tools and run a startup list and then paste that here too......
That second DUN box is a little worrisome.

Budfred - i have uninstalled the modem, the modem drivers etc several times and still nothing.
One thing though is that the HDD im using is from another pc - i celaned it up - removing drivers etc but as it was used for the internet before with another modem i was wondering what effect this might have.

Did you reformat and reinstall with that harddrive? If you didn't that could be a big source of the problem The registry settings would be expecting a different configuration than they find and this can lead to all sorts of fun problems. I am not sure that you can reasonably clean out all the old references to get the system working properly, someone else may know more.

another dial up connection box comes up saying select the services you wish to connect to
What is the exact message here - and - is this from BT by any chance?
What options does it give you and why do you cancel it?
Which of BT's ISP connections are you using/subscribed to?
Do you use a manually-configured DUN or a "connectoid" installed by BT?

its a normal windows du box. Its the dial-up box that appears if you try to open explorer without being on the internet. except it comes up half way through connecting to the internet. And if i click connect - it restarts my current connection, if i press cancel it just cancels my connection.
If i do click cancel and then connect again the du box doesnt re-appear the second time.
im subscribed to lineone (now tiscali) there is no problem with them - i have no problems with connecting etc.
I use a manually configured dun
I thought I had dropped in an answer yesterday......but it isn't here.....
So...
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MediaLoads Installer] "C:\Program Files\DownloadWare\dw.exe" /H
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\evntsvc.exe -osboot
Kill those two....Hijcak this should be able to fix them.....the first can be, in some case used as a dialer. The second, Real updater does not have to run at boot and it can be a resource hog and sometimes cause dial up problems, because it will want to connect at boot up.
To kill the first one, you may have to do it in safe mode, so it won't be running.
The second can be partially disabled in the Realplayer options and then just rename the file to something with a .bak extension.

right - i have done that and it seems to have done the trick regarding the dun box that kept appearing. It doesnt come up anymore!
But still getting the same problem when dialing up - have to set it so it doesnt detect dial tone before dialling - sometimes it dials up sometimes it doesnt. (Seems like it is trying to dial) on an engaged tone or something) cant really explain.
I noted somewhere that there may be problems if the modem is on com3 or com4. Mine is on com3 and was wondering if there was any coflict with an iq address? (have i got that right?)
mjc- cheers for the help on the dun - worked a treat.

What version of win? What version of DUN? there was an update for DUN came out for Win98 a while ago that resolved connection problems. The following link might help out.
http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=DUN+update&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en&btnG=Google+Search
The next link will take you to ver 1.4

For the first problem of the modem not being able to detect the phone line when "wait for dialtone before dialing" is ticked:
Try putting a few commas before the phone no of your ISP, eg if the hunting no for the ISP is 15700, put ,,15700 as the phone no, two commas will be ok. Now, try to connect with "wait for dialtone before dialing" ticked. Putting commas before the phone no will create certain delay before dialing so that the modem will be able to detect the phone line.
For the second problem 6 out of ten:
Problem like this can occur in internal PCI modems if you've got the phone line extended from beyond the modem ,ie if other phone/fax is connected to the line or phone out of the modem. Just give the modem the phone line and don't connect anything to the line or phone out of the modem and try to connect.
Lower the maximum speed of your modem. Use the speed to match your bandwidth offered by your ISP/ telephone or a step lower than that. If you lower the speed of the modem from the device manager only it won't work, lower it from the properties of the connection as well(from the configure button of the connections properties).
Try using some AT commands to bring down the speed of your modem connection. Refer to your modem manual for the list of the commands or take a loot at http://808hi.com/56k/x2-linklimit.asp. I hope you know how and where to put the AT commands. If you need help on AT commands, I'll post it later after your reply, or maybe someone else will.
For a quick test you can also try putting a few commas after the phone no, eg 15700,, and try to connect. Putting commas at the back will disable V90 and can help to solve your second problem, 6 out of ten. If both of them, I mean putting commas after or before the phone helps, you can use them both, eg ,,15700,, as the phone no.
Aboves two problems may well be the result of faulty modem or incorrect drivers as well.
For the third problem, annoying dialog box:
In windowsXP, this can happen if you've got two modem installed. You can disable this by unticiking the modem you don't require or use from the properties of the connection. But if isn't windowsXP that you are using, it could be those annoying warez/porno dialers from internet. Check and remove the unwanted ****s from the startup list of windows. Use msconfig to remove them from loading with windows or use the Regcleaner from jv16.org, its free. Or you may use other adwares/spywares removers as folks here have already suggested.
It would be easier if you could tell us what modem(the chipset) and which version of windows you are using.
Hope this helps! :)

thanks for that curatoR,
will try adding the comma's, im a little unsure about the AT commands. Can anyone enlighten me?
its an netodragon internal pci modem (ambient chipset) on win98se i believe. I do have it plugged into an extension lead and then into the phone line so will try to connect just by connecting straight to the phone line.
Any idea's of an updated driver for the netodragon 56k internal pci modem? i have looked but cant find a site that gives details. It uses ambient drivers, as i want to update the drivers to make sure this is not the problem.

Guys -
i am now having major problems with this modem, i kept having the same problems as above and so forked out for a new internal modem to check whether it was just the modem or drivers. In preparation for this i removed the modem from control panel/system devices etc. And then shut down the pc and swapped modems.
When i loadedm it came up with the found new hardware - pci commnuication device. Went through to install the drivers from the disk but it said no drivers found. I thought this was weird as i had the correct path etc and they were right.
So i exited and went to device manager where showed the pci communication device with a yello asterix. So i went to control panel/modems to do an add wizard but when doing this it said no modems found. Turns out it was only searching com 1 and not com 2, com 3 etc. (incidentally mine is in com3) went back and it seems com3 has now dissappeared!!!!! it is not there.
If this is suddenly the case how come it picks it up on startup each time. In system/device manager it only shows com1 and printer port under the port icon.
firstly can i reinstall com3?? did it disappear because i uninstalled the old modem? i have done this before though and it still picked it up just this time i swapped modems.
any ideas would be such a help as really stuck. am using another pc at the mo to get some info but tis my little sisters one that is broke so need to help her!
btw using aol now - had same prob as before as not always connecting (would that cause this?) sorry for the long explanation but need help!
Boot into Safe mode and remove all the modem drivers found there (start with Add/Remove programs and then Device manager).
You may actually need to install the drivers first, before you physically install the modem, so read the documentation that came with it and follow that setup procedure exactly.
In any case, after you remove all the drivers in Safe Mode, shut down the machine and remove the modem, then reboot without any modem installed, then shut down again and follow the setup procedure.

Com 3 is a virtual port that will come and go depending on whether the software calls for it. I would check your software for the new modem and make sure that it doesn't have an install program to setup the modem for you. If it does, use it.
If it doesn't, I would go into Safe Mode and Remove all drivers associated with any modem that you can find. I would then take the modem out and move it to another PCI slot or at least reseat it. I would then boot into Safe Mode again and use Add New Hardware to install the modem drivers again. If this fails, I would go into BIOS and disable COM 2, try again and see if the modem works. If it does, I would either reactivate COM 2 or leave it, depending on whether I thought I needed it.

cheers for the quick response guys. appreciate it.
mjc - i have booted into safe mode and removed anything to do with the modem. I did notice though i had like 4 com1 's and 4 printer ports? is that normal?
the crap manual (or piece of paper i like to call it) says to basically run win and it will pick up the modem and go through wizard and have disk and gives the path for the driver.
im gonna now make sure all stuff is removed in safe mode, and then shut down, remove modem, then startup and then shut down, and then install modem - is that correct? will post back any info.
Budfred - there is no install program - just links to the drivers. When i just went into safe mode there was a couple of the pci communication device etc - but it wasnt picking it up as a modem.
How would i diasble/enable the com ports? like i said the internal modem is in com3 as i left com2 empty.
Budfred
12-27-2002, 01:39 PM
More than one COM 1 or LPT1 port is not normal and suggests that this could be part of the problem. I would Remove them all in Safe Mode and let Windows reinstall them.
Any PCI communication device is probably related to the modem and should be removed.
I would try the other things before disabling the COM port, but if you need to, you simply go into CMOS/BIOS setup at boot, usually by pressing "DEL" on the opening screen and look for the section with port settings. Highlight COM2 and move through the options, usually Enable and Disable, choose Disable. Save and Close. The computer will reboot and you won't have COM2 anymore.
