View Full Version : Epox 8K3A+ No Boot

I have a Epox 8k3a+ MB with AMD 1900XP Processor, I have 1 stick of 512mb of Corsair CMX512-3200 XMS3200v1.1 memory and I can't get the system to boot. I get no video... nothing except the CPU fan and the Post Code Port works. The Post Code Port reads C1, the "Red Led" next to the Dimm Sockets does not light up.
I've cleared the CMOS a number of times switched the FSB jumper from 100mhz to 133mhz. I've tried another processor that I know is good and another Video card that is good. I removed and reseated the Memory stick in all three sockets a number of times. I've removed the MB from the case and am running it on the foam pad with only the Power Supply plugged into the board along with the video card, memory, power switch and cpu and fan/heatsink installed. I still get the same C1 Post code and only cpu fan works.
I have no way to test the memory in another MB because I don't know anyone with a Motherboard that uses DDR memory.
Is the Red Led next to the Dimm Sockets supposed to be lit when the power supply is plugged in? The power Supply is a Antec True 480W and I know it works because I'm using it now.
Any help and/or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Hello baccarat,

Welcome tohttp://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif Forums!

C1 appears to point in the Memory Direction (http://www.epox.com/html/support-article.asp?Article=p4T33lh41D4r3HH01c0xB10m0i3on2 O11ES3C3).

Also, here's Crucial's recommended RAM: http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.asp?Mfr%2BProductline=EPoX%2BEPoX&mfr=EPoX&model=EP-8K3A%2B&submit=Go

Hi Whyzman,

Voltage appears to be incorrect on your Corsair... [QUOTE]

Thanks for the quick reply to my problem. I hope your correct because then I can RMA the memory, put this thing together and get it off my desk.
I have to ask why you think the memory voltage is incorrect... I maybe wrong on this but I think the Motherboard sets the memory voltage at default and after you get everything up and running you can go into the bios and increase the voltage to whatever is needed for it to run stable as long as you stay under 2.8v.

Thanks again and sorry for the delay in my reply but I had to go out of town for a day.

The Red LED indicates power on situation to the

Motherboard.

Hopefully you haven't been re-seating anything

(in the beginning) with power on.

Personally I would RMA the Mboard quickly.

I'm not sure about the RAM....I was just looking at the listed voltages from Crucial vs. Corsair...I would verify with Corsair that this is indeed correct RAM for this board....

Now, no power to the MB, that would put a RAM issue on the back burner...

What does the manual say regarding the LED next to the Dimm sockets?

Please check page 3-2 of the 8K3A+ manual.

LED3
Power On and DIMM Socket
remain powered LED.
(Dip type Red)

When the Mboard is in a power on state
and the DIMM socket is powered this
LED will be functional.

Hence it leads to a C1 Post Code error.

whyzman and ranchdog,

whyzman...Looks like ranchdog answered your question for me. What it says in the manual is what he quoted, but to me it's a bit ambiguous.
I've been sparring with Epox Tech via email for four day's now and they would never give me a clear answer, in fact, they ignored that question all together. Finally they advised me to try different memory and/or motherboard. After I expanded to them that in Vermont you just don't go into town a buy a stick of DDR Memory and before I spent $100 on new memory I wanted to know categorically if that "Red Led" next to the Dimm Sockets would light if there was no memory installed and if the Led would be Lit if there was bad memory in the socket...provided there was a power supply was hooked up and plugged into the Motherboard. The answer I got was, "The LED is not related to the DIMM. Perhaps its best to have your dealer or a local tech take a look in person. Its very difficult via email to diagnose the problem."
Anyway, I emailed New Egg and requested a RMA and at this moment I am waiting to hear from them as to see if they will approve it. If they do I will have to exchange it for different model board because they have no 8K3A+ in stock. If they reject it I will have to RMA it to Epox and pay $10. or $15. for what will probably be a Refurb.
No I never reseated anything with the Power supply hooked.

Thank's a ton for all the help you guys have given me.

Well, from my experience and that of many others who frequent here, you couldn't ask for a better eTailer to be dealing with than NewEgg. In fact, you might want to point that out to them.....

Good luck, and keep us informed of your progress....

whyzman and ranchdog,

I got my RMA approval from NewEgg today, 12/9. Maybe I'll get this thing together and have it in the case soon.
I agree with you about NewEgg being the best. I was trying to think of another merchant web site, computer gear or anything else, that not only gives such good customer service but also makes it so damn easy to go through RMA, etc., I can't think of one. Since I live in Vermont I do most of my shopping on the 'net.
When I first got on the net I used to do a lot of business with PC Connection. They had a deal that no matter what you purchased, if you ordered it before 3am you got it the next day. It didn't make any difference if you ordered a box floppies or a computer... shipping was a flat $5.00 for everything.
NewEgg does it right and the goodwill is paying off for them.
