Welcome to http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif

Power down. Remove the CDROM's cables, power and IDE. Boot up. Power down again and reinstall the cables. Boot up.

It should reinstall the drivers once it sees the CDROM again. Post back either way.

Yeah, I disconnected the CD rom drive from the computer after I powered down. I powered up, powered down, reinstalled the CD, powered up again, stll nothing. See, I am using windows 95. The CD rom drive doesn't even appear in Device manager. Upon startup however, the computer says error, cannot find MSCD.EXE or something like that. I am simply stumped. I am a moron aspiring to become a household geek. Tough. Please help.

Hi,

Did you mean it could not locate MSCDEX.exe ?

Have you tried adding the CD Rom through the add new hardware wizard?

If you have a windows 95 boot disk you should be able to restore the missing file from that (I think).

Yeah the computer could not locate MSCDEX.EXE I tried adding the cd rom drive using the add hardware utility but the options I was given were Mitsumi, Sony and some other CD rom controller. My CD rom drive is Vertos. I tried downloading a driver from the net, but I couldn't find my model-which is 300HPD. I only have a windows 98 boot disk, my os is however windows 95. I do have a windows98 cd and I have considered wiping out my hard drives(C&D) and installing win98 fresh, but I suspect I cannot do this without a working cd rom drive. I tried using the windows98 boot disk, but the computer says there are no cd rom drives installed. The drive is activated on startup 'cos the green light shows; when I put in a cd, I can hear it whirring inside, but that is about all I get. Don't give up on me please, help.

To download a [Windows 98] driver for "Vertos 300HPD" [or Win 95 driver "vertos.zip"] go here

When you use your Win98 boot disk, are you selecting to boot with CD support. If you are and it still says you have no cd drive, there is something wrong with the hardware. The Win98 boot disk loads a generic CD drive driver and should work for any drive out there. It sound like you need to check the cable connections, try plugging them in and unplugging. Make sure they are not in upside down. If it still doesn't work, I would try another cable. If need be, you could use your hard drive cable and see if it works, then go buy a new one if it does so you can reconnect your hard drive. If it still doesn't work, you can find some really good deals on CDs these days. I think it is Office Max this week that is offering a top rated CDRW for $20 after rebates.

Edit: Oops, just saw that you are in Germany, so Office Max is probably not an option. Nonetheless, you can probably find a good deal on a CD drive in your area.

Try another drive....also since this is a Win95 era machine there is the possiblity that the CD drive uses a proprietary connection and is hooked up to the sound card instead of the IDE channels.

Also try cleaning the drive......

The generic drivers don't work for all drives, Budfred, and Microsoft give instructions on how to replace the generic drivers when they don't.
