TASK= want to factory install win98..ie.. set up win98se on a totally blank hardrive in IBM Thinkpad 760X notebook,-- using external parelel port Bakpak CDROM.
I am confused--I know I need to use a "setup disc" and "have the Bakpak drivers on said disc"..but..I do not know which files (from Bakpak setup disc) I need to copy-nor do I know how to copy them (to the setup disc).
Can sumone please help--or--refer me to a web site where this topic/procedure is discussed in detail. I need to know the specific commands/syntax etc to use.
thank very much!!
If I cant do this--I will have to first load win95 (28 floppies) and then load Bakpak drivers and then load win98..tis is hardly a "clean install" (of win98) which I want!
Tried this procedure and found the audio (sound) would stutter and stick on the notebook (ES12688 chip).
ANY help would be GREATLY appreciated!!! :)

I am not sure how BakPak works, so keep that in mind with these suggestions. What I would do is use a Win98 Startup disk, select to start with CD support and then copy the install files from the CD to the hard drive. Then do the install using the Setup command from a dos C: prompt. You may need to use the Bakpak software to get the CD working, but then you should be able to do the copy and install.

The problem is that the generic DOS CD driver on the 98 boot disk most likely doesn't recognise the external Backpack drive. SO see if if you can locate a DOS driver for it to substitute for the generic.

yes- MJC-thats the problem.
I have the Bakpak driver disc (which contains about 15 separate files).
Need to know which files to copy of that disc, and the DOS commands and syntax to accomplish this copying..(from Bakpak driver disc to win98setup disc)..
Once that's done--the external cdrom should work with the computer to enable win98 installation.
thanx.

Ok, this is what I would try to do. Install the system files from the Win98 Startup disk on to the hard drive. Go here to see the proper syntax:
http://www.computerhope.com/syshlp.htm
Then I would copy or install the drivers on the Bakpak disk to the hard drive. If install is an option it would be preferable.
Then remove the floppy and boot to the hard drive which will then hopefully include Bakpak support.

OK!!!
I think my problem is--i dont have the Bakpak cdrom drivers loaded into the autoexec/config.sys files on the win98se setup disc.
I do have the Bakpak driver disc--this disc has 15 different files on it--i take it the one to should copy is the one which ends in ".sys" (without the quotes)?
If so--what would be the syntax/command(s) to do this?
many thanx=--im new at this and really want to master this procedure !!

That link I gave you will tell you more than you ever wanted to know about the syntax of any DOS command you might like. However, I would try to install the driver if you can. As I said earlier, set up your C: drive to be bootable with the Sys command from the Startup disk, then install the driver to the C: drive. This will set it up in Autoexec.bat if it is needed there. You can probably do this if you have a Setup or Install file on the Bakpak disk.
If you can't do this, I would copy all the file on the Bakpak disk to the C: drive rather than worrying about which one to use. I believe that is simply:
A:>copy A:*.* C:
as in here: http://www.computerhope.com/copyhlp.htm
If necessary, you can use this link to also find out how to use Edit to install the driver in the Autoexec file so that it will activate the Bakpak from the C: drive.
