Here we go again! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
My brother has a problem with his comp that he has asked me to see if I can fix it.
I apologize for the lentgh of the post. Took awhile to describe the problem.
Specs:
Pheonix computer
233mgz MMX
2 gig HDD
52X Blaster CD Rom
32mgb ram

The problem:
When he first called me, the pc would try to boot, it would get to the ME splash screen and then go to the safe mode menu. However it would not boot to safe mode. We tried scanreg/restore and restored an earlier back up of the registry and also tried scandisk using Win98SE start up floppy. Tried restoring BIOS to default. No go.
Then, before I could get back over there, he got someone else to go ahead and reformat C. But they could not get it to install windows because the pc would not run cd-rom. (The cd-rom is a newer unit installed when the old one died.) I went over and reformatted C again and copied the system files. Decided to try to install win95. (I had run into this once before while reformatting his pc and that's what I had done then.) Used Win95 start up floppy. It copied files from floppy, then splash screen came up. Then it spit the win 95 cd out of the drive and gave this error: ASPIDISK.SYS not installed, along with error messages about not being able to reconize the drive. I checked the directory on C and found this file under directory Winbak/Command. When the pc first boots, it recognizes the rom (even gives its name) and lists it as secondary master.
I found a section of PC Guide detailing cd-rom driver installation but I didn't see this file mentioned so I was hoping someone would give me their thoughts on this problem before I try anything. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Hi,

First, I am surprised that the computer will even run ME.

You might try going to www.bootdisk.com (http://www.bootdisk.com) and downloading a boot disk specific to whatever OS you're trying to install. This could be the least-hassle way to go. Make sure to download a boot disk that will enable CD-ROM support. Those disks have generic drivers that work with many CD-ROMs on the market.

Once you have made the floppy boot disk, boot up with it and choose "Startup with CD-ROM Support" or something like that. Then see if you can install an OS.

Some others may have an idea or two as well. Try the new boot disk first and post back with any problems or successes.

Cheers,

Big Blue 66

Hi Pavermech,
As Blue said, I'm suprised this machine would even come on with ME. It does not work well with older machines. Stick with 95 (or 98se)if you have it.
Do you have the drivers disk for the new CD?
With my 95 box, after formatting, I need to copy the mscdex.exe from boot disk to c:. Then install the CD drivers that came with the drive. This is kind of a fussy proceedure as I have to go thru the custom install steps and just accept the defaults. All is well with recognizing the drive after that.
Your bios will recognize the hardware, but the system will not recognize the drive without the correct drivers and command line in "autoexec.bat".
Hope this helps

It's nice to know if we helped you out. Please let us know IF and WHAT fixed the problem.

http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif Thanks for the input BigBlue and Bassman!
I guess the reason that the pc would run ME is that I installed the upgrade that he bought on top of Win95! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif I know that's wierd, but he bought the upgrade and that was the only way to get it to work. Didn't have any problems, either until now. Thanks for the info on installing the drivers, I found a section on Pcguide that i think might help by installing the drivers onto the hard drive before windows installation. I am going to try that and I will let you know how it works out. It will probably be awhile before I get a chance to work on it again, so keep an eye out. I don't know why this problem has occured now and didn't happen the last time I formatted his drive.
By the way, does anyone know what ASPIDISK.SYS is. Just curious.
Thanks again! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

From what I can decipher on the Korean page I viewed...that is related to a removable disk (Zip?) and is a line in the config.sys file. I'm sure it is part of the driver package for a zip. I saw similar filenames ending with CD also. www.google.com (http://www.google.com) produced several hits for the line.
