Hi I am new here and I am in desperate need of help.
For some time now my DVD-ROM drive no longer plays a majority of my DVDS. It used to play them all, but now only plays three or four. I am completely baffeled to why my computer would suddenly stop recognizing DVDs and not only that, but play a small number DVDs. I assume it is not the program that I use to play DVDs (Power DVD) because when I load a DVD into my D drive and then go to My Computer, my computer does not even recognize a disc even being in the machine. The error that pops up is something to the effect of "no disc found".
Any help would be appreciated.

Hello moloko,
Try cleaning the DVD Drive
They have kits at best buy for doing just that.
If after cleaning it there is still a problem, you may be able to have someone open the drive and professionally clean it.
If this is not successful then you will most likely need to get a new drive.
You could also have a problem with the data ribbon inside the computer or a similar problem but most likely it just needs to be cleaned.
EDIT: Also make sure your disks are clean before you insert them in the drive.........

Thanks for the help.
I have another question though.
If there was something dirty in my DVD-ROM drive, shouldn't none of my DVDs work rather than a majority not working but a small amount still working?

Dont know much about DVD's, but its not a region issue is it, as when you first have it installed you are allowed to play or change different Region DVD's (i.e DVDs from USA will be different region to Far East). Upto a certain amount of times and when you have reached this limit it locks onto the last region changed.
Would explain why some DVD's work and some dont especially if you have been obtaining them from different sources.

Well I know absolutely nothing about what was just mentioned in that last post, but as far as it reading some disks and not others, all disks arent the same, and that pretty much says it.
Pretty common thing when the drive is dirty moloko
The longer it stays dirty the less number of disks itll read until one day it wont read any at all.....if that in fact is the problem.....sure sounds like it to me though.......
Good Luck!

Actually all of my DVDs are region 1. So I don't think it is a region issue.
I should also add that my DVD-ROM drive has no problem reading audio CDs and data CDs, just certain DVDs.

moloko,
Generally Audio CD's are the last thing to go, and your last statement is 100% consistant with my previous statements. Without going into all the boring details, 1st the DVD's should stop werking then mixed mode CD's then Data CD's then audio last.....<- something along those lines....
Have you tried to clean it yet? http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif
