Guys help me out...
I have just put directx 8.1 on my daughters pc, running win2k, sp2. I also updated the video driver to the latest Nvidia version.. All is not well, when I try to run the DX test it does the first one (oblong on the screen) the the little bouncing box/ball thing, if I try the next one it crashes or locks out. I have tried skipping this test and move to the dx test, it just locks up again. I have reinstalled the DX 8.1 still the same, any suggestions???
Try a couple diffeent versions of the Detonators, sometimes, depending on the system config the latest is not the best.
Also try backing down the hardware acceleration a notch.

I have read somewhere about a glitch with DirectX in certain situations. Cant remember exactly what it was. But here is a Google link that will allow you to download the released patch and info about it

Not 100% sure but there may have been different downloads of DirectX 8.1 for different OSes so I hope you got the right one. If memory serves (often faulty of late! :D) the one for Win2K was different than the one for Win98/ME for example.
This link might or might not be relevant to you:- Video Capture Update for DirectX 8.0 (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/downloads/vidcap.asp)
DirectX 9.0 (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/downloads/drx90.asp) is now available and could be another way to go. Bear in mind that, as with v.8, it can't be uninstalled. Once there - its there for good, so unless you have an image file of your installation you won't be able to go back in time with Win2000.
A method of last resort..
DirectX Buster (http://www.directxbuster.de/index_e.html)
DirectX Eradicator (http://www.freewebz.com/firecat/) (this is the one I have used in the past, after manually doing it...)

Very useful link mjc
The manual method is always fun.........(and so is a root canal)
the first thing for the manual method is toi use DXDiag and get a list of all the files installed, then you search for each one and remove all the associated reg entries for it, then using the list you remove all the files. Then you run the installer for your desired version........and hope you haven't made a mistake and forgot one....(always use a reg backup and rename, don't delete the files). It took me over 3 hours the first run through, after the third I was down to about an hour. Then I found the DXEradicator link.....under 5 minutes and it is done.

Tried the things you guys said other than removing directx 8.1, I have the correct version installed for the OS and the new Nvidia driver does work, it is working with this pc running the same card!! Now something strange, both pc's are dual boot, if I run the directx tests in win98, new drivers and directx 8.0 all is ok, I run the directx test on the other pc in 8.1 on Win2k all is ok?? I have looked to see if there are any updates but all seem to be prior to sp2, so all should be ok... What the hell is going on??
