Hi,
About 6 months ago I put together the following system:

Duron 1GHz
Gigabyte GA-7ZXE mobo
128MB PC133 RAM
Fugitsu 40GB HD

Yesterday I installed a new network card. Machine worked fine for a while and then suddenly froze. On reboot I got 3 beeps (64K base RAM fault) which seemed to be solved by reseating the DIMM. Today the slystem is running at a crawl, partuclarly while booting. The CPU seems to be running quite hot: BIOS reports the CPU temp as 53C. The CPU funning is also making nasty noises. The fan speed is fluctuating at around 4000RPM, and the core voltage is moving between 1.79 and 1.81V. I am not sure really what is going on here! any suggestions welcome.

Hi Wizened Sage,

If the CPU is running hot and the fan is making strange noises, try a new fan.

The fan I run on my P3 runs at 5443rpm.

Fans are cheap. You probably still have time to run down to the local computer shop and pick one up. :)

Did you set the voltage for the CPU manually? It' supposed to run at 1.75v

Granted, 1.79-1.81 is not a huge difference, and could be the result of incorrect monitoring hardware, but if you have accidentally set the voltage to 1.775 or 1.80, that would help explain the increased temp...

Hi & thanks for the reply,
No I didn't set the voltage myself: I only set the FSB with a jumper (100Mhz). I haven't noticed any overheating before today, either. I'm going to remove the fan and give it a clean... if not then I will probably try a new fan
Thanks.
