Hi my next door neighbour has a packard bell machine which is used by his children for educational and games software, he is not connected to the net. This morning he has a problem when booting up, his machine is coming up with the message 'serial port1 resource conflict' and goes no further. can anyone explain what he needs to do to overcome this?
Many thanks
Albear
PS already posted this in announcements.....apologies for incorrect posting there

It sounds like the BIOS has gotten reset. On most PB's, you enter the BIOS through the F1 keystoke (Phoenix BIOS). Once in here, you need to find the Serial Port 1 or COM 1 setting and ensure that it is either setup for 3F8 IRQ 4 or disabled. You will also want to make sure Serial Port 2 is set to 2F8 IRQ 3 or disabled also. If the computer has a modem installed in it, then you will want to find out what COM port it is configured for. It sounds like COM 1 was originally disabled in the BIOS and the modem was setup for use on that port. Check the Device Manager or the Modems Properties in the Control panel to determine how it is configured.

Start/Settings/Control Panel/System <- Click on the Device manager Tab on Top and then Chosse the Modem. Here, ensure the modem is highlighted, then select Propeties from Below to determine the configuration settings for it. Also, these settings can be obtained from the Modem Properties in the Control panel as well.

If the Modem is using COM 1, then simply reboot the system, re-enter the BIOS and disable COM1. Hope this helps some.
