I am putting my first computer together using an Asus A7V with an Athlon 1 gig. I got it all together and gave it power. Nothing happened. I saw the green light on the motherboard, but the fans didn't even spin. I checked the power supply and it is set at 110. I could sure use some help!!

Thanks,
Stryker

Find a GOOD computer person to "Mentor" you through your first computer build!!! You have some expensive stuff there and it sounds to me like you either have a "Short", as a result of the way you installed the motherboard on the "Case" or you have not installed a "REQUIRED" component(or you have a defective required component)....Here are the things you MUST have installed on the motherboard [ or have to do] to get that Athalon to "Post" to the Bios settings:
1. There is a jumper on the motherboard to "Reset" the bios or "Normal" setting..it must be on "Normal" setting for system to post up.
2. You have to have the CPU in the Socket A correctly and have a good thermal Fan on top of the cpu & the fan plugged into a power source. Never try to boot a AMD Athalon without a Fan running!!!
3. You MUST have RAM installed......in this case, it needs to be PC100 or PC133 SDRAM.
4. You Must have a Video Card installed.....in the case of the A7V, a AGP video card is best.
With all of this done, you "Should" be able to Post-up the system to a RAM count and into the Bios Setup Screen......[with a keyboard in its socket to type the "delete" key....to get into Setup].

I sure appreciate your quick response!!! I have double check and I cannot see anything that should be shorting out my motherboard. I have all the required components installed and am at a loss. What I don't understand is that the green light on the motherboard is on, but when i push the power button on the front of the case I get a quick flash of a green light and then it goes out and nothing else happens. The green light on the motherboard stays on. I wish I did know of someone to mentor me through this , because that would be the best case scenario. I have the cpu in the socket correctly with a global win fop32 fan/heatsink.
I haven't touched any jumpers or settings on the motherboard.

Is there something on the motherboard I need to adjust. (jumper, ect)
Could I have a bad power switch?

Any other thoughts or advice will be greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks Again!!

Pull everything except for the RAM, CPU and video card. Disconnect the ribbon cables fro the floppy and IDE devices. Disconnect the case light connectors and all add on cards you may have in the system (besides the video card), then attempt to power up. Let us know then.

If that board is not far from the A7V133...that green light on the motherboard means you got power to it (meaning it is plugged in)...that's all. If that goes out when you power on...then you've got to do as Randy advises and check for a shorting problem. Is that power supply AMD approved with adequate wattage?

Don't fry that CPU...

Run through all the jumper settings anyway...use the manual and check every one of them...those boards are not always set to default (nuthin's a 100% - 100% of the time). If this board has DIP switches on it like the A7V133 does...check them as well.

Also Make Sure the Power Switch and Reset connectors from the case switches are connected correctly. To the mother board.
They are both momentary switches and only make a connection when pushed and or held in.
(Power switch Held in for 4 seconds to put system into suspend mode )

One Question Are you getting the Normal One short Beep? During the power cycle ?

Check the Jumper points for the Clear Cmos.
You may also want to try using the Clear Cmos while booting.
Short out the Clear Cmos points and press DEL key while booting.
This should clear anything set in cmos and boot to the bios setup screen

I dont know about your motherboard, but I have seen problems similar before where the board can be set to run AT and ATX psu and a jumper must be set and if it is wrong you can get similar symptoms to waht you are getting.

One More thing to check.
The Asus a7v 133 has a different memory layout.
It has the {cpu} [dimm3] [dimm2] [dimm1]

If you don't the memory installed in Dimm 1 correctly it will not post

YOU GUYS ROCK!!! Thank you so much for all of your advice. I did as you said and pulled everything and found that i did have a short under the motherboard from the case. I rectified that, replugged everything in and flicked the switch. My system came alive, IT WAS LIKE MUSIC TO MY EARS!!

I do feel pretty stupid, but then again this is my first time. Thanks Again!!!!!

Im Out....

I agree, never feel stupid when you learn something. And that's what we're here for...

Randy pegged the problem, that's what he meant by referring to a possible short.
