Hi everyone. I am in the mist of formating my hard disk drive. I have gone through the process of partitioning the disk drive which is 30Gb. It has taken over 3.5 hours to format 4% of the drive. Any suggestions as to why this is taking so long would be greatly appreciated. Is there anyway of aborting the operation? If I shut the system manually, will it damage the disk drive? Thank you.
What size did you make the partitions and are you formatting from DOS or a bootdisk?

I have partitioned to 100% of the drive and I am formating from boot disk.
There are Hard Drive Capacity Barriers (http://www.maxtor.com/technology/whitepapers/63001.html) caused by BIOS and operating systems that may be causing your problem. It would help to know your motherboard model and operating system. Click the link above for some information.

You could try giving a few partitions then see if it speeds up.
You could use scandisk to see if there are any problems.

I have been using this hard disk drive for about a year now and Windows98 has always shown its true capacity. But I noticed a big drop in the system's performance over the last couple of months, eg. to fire up the PC might sometimes take as long as 10 to 15 minutes, or to open applications like MS Word can take what seems like forever. I have 128MB of RAM, so I don't think it's due to the lack of resources.
I restarted the process of formating the disk drive today. I deleted the previous primary partition and repartitioned it again. This repartition operation took about an hour, which I think is fairly long. And to activate it took a further 45 minutes to an hour. The formating stage was as slow as before. However, I did notice a regular clicking noise from the disk drive, otherwise, it was dead silent. I suspected the disk drive was dead. I think it's just going round and round and not doing what it should.
Skhips, if I give it a few partitions (I guess you were referring to extended, logical and non MS DOS partition), will I not waste the storage space in the other partitions? I believe the latter three partitions are not used as much by Windows98 as in the pure DOS days, eventhough DOS still runs in the background of Windows.

This is a test message. I have posted a long message about an hour ago, but it hasn't shown up yet. Is there a limitation to the number of words allowed here? I am newbie to forum.

I think he needs to hit Refresh or Reload, depending on his browser. Changing cache setting can also force the browser to refresh the page, rather than loading the cached copy.
