I know I have probably already asked my share of questions, but I jump at the chance to access such a wealth of information from so many talented people. I haven't encountered this yet, but when I do get this new system up and running, I have the problem of setting up a blank hard disk. I've done this before with old, DOS machines... but I've never done this without starting from a DOS base. How do I start up this new machine, and then install windows? I have a feeling a boot disk will be involved, but how do I make one? And secondly, when I do make one, how will I access the windows CD-ROM when I haven't an MS-DOS driver for the CD-ROM installed? I realize these questions are a bit dated, but it reflects my lack of experience with starting from scratch with the newer software. Thankyou so much for your help!

Hello Coroloro,

1st and easiest way is, if your new MoBo supports booting from the CD and you have a full version bootable Windows CD, just pop in the disk and go......the BIOS should be set default to boot from A-C-CD. When it doesnt find an OS on either the floppy drive or the Hard Drive it'll automatically look for the CD. If the BIOS is "not" set to boot from the CD, then go in and set it up to do so..........(Most new MoBo's will do this)

Good Luck!

And dont worry bout the "dated questions", was only about a year ago that "I" realized this was posible.........and its been posible lots longer then a year heh http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

EDIT: Im assuming that by "Blank Hard Disk" you mean a new Hard Drive, you may need to run FDISK on the HDD to set up the FAT, if its not already set up, before you can do what I described above (use the windows floppy that comes with the CD to do this)...........I figure from your reference to you having previous experience, you can handle FDISK on your own if it needs to be done. If not, come on back and ask, Im sure someone will help ya through that...........

No need to install DOS or a CDRom driver anymore http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif woohoo! heh

What I meant by what I said is hopefully less confusing then the contemplation of the question that led to the confusion in the 1st place.......

Or you can use a Win98 bootdisk, add/remove programs -> startup disk, and select the with cdrom support...it sets up a RAM disk and loads the drivers there. Then drop the CD in the drive and go.
