Hi, yesterday I made a clean install of Windows XP pro, and started loading all the drivers for my hardware. When it came to CD-RW I just put the cd that came with my HP hardware. Since the first reboot, there's a message that says that there's a cd recording software that makes Windows unstable, and that Windows stops them from loading. So I uninstalled the software, deleted manually all the files tha Windows couldn't uninstall. Then I downloaded the driver from HP.com and installed it. But surprise! Every time I boot, Windows remembers me that there is cd recording software that can make the system unstable. So I booted in safe mode and uninstalled the drivers that were still there. But only for a while, because they're still there on next boot. Am I doing something wrong? Have I skipped some important step?

Which recording software?

There are some known issues with Nero that I think the first service pack for XP is supposed to take care of...have you add the service pack yet?

Check if anything is loaded in the startup (MSCONFIG). I think the CD-RW drivers are inbuilt in Windows XP and you need not download it separately. Try removing and reinstalling the CD-RW drive from the device manager, in safe mode.

Hi, Thank you all for your answers. The software I had installed is from Roxio, Direct CD, which I use for saving my bills and documents in cd's that I can alter later.
I could uninstall it in the end, and downloaded drivers from HP, and this time it worked. I am very confused, because I did the very same things I did before: boot in safe mode, uninstall the drive, turn the computer off and plug the drive before booting again. This time it found the new hardware and asked me for the drivers, which I had previously downloaded. The bad thing is I'll have to find a new way of saving my bills. Thank you all.
