Asus K-7V mainboard - AMD Athlon 850 with single-fan CoolMaster cooler

I have installed Asus Probe monitoring software and it keeps telling me for over a week now that my CPU is dangerously overheating (223 degrees F reported))! In the BIOS the option to set a treshold temp for the CPU is grayed out.
But my system has been running fine: no crashes, no spontaneous reboots...
My CPU fan seems to be running OK. I switched the CPU with a brand new AMD K-6 600 (with a brand new cooler)from my wife's pc as a test. Asus Probe is still reporting an overheated CPU at the same temp!

Could it be a software false alert? I'm considering replacing my cooler with a dual-fan one anyway. Please help!

There is no mystery whatsoever - only inability to perceive the obvious.

As far as I'm aware CPUs that overheat cause the system to lock-up amongst other things. You mentioned that this is not (yet) happened on your system. Add this to the evidence that when you change the CPU you get the same result, points, in my humble opinion, to the software. One test you could do before the avalanche of helpful replies is to test the software on another computer, perhaps your wife's. If you get the same reply this may give further evidence to pointing to the software.
If you are considering getting a dual fan then fine. But if this still gives an alert this won't tell you that the fan has made a difference. I would recommend getting a few points proved before adding more.
Whilst on the subject: to people who know- can you feel the heat coming of a hot processor (I have a PI 133 which keeps me cold at work)? This again may help you helgerry.

Hi,

Try this: Open the case and place a common household fan so it blows at an angle across the components, especially the CPU. Then, try the s/w test again. What are the results?

It sounds suspiciously like a software glitch to me, especially since you have had no heat related problems. Does your BIOS have temperature reporting capability?

If in fact your CPU is running at that temperature, methinks it would be toast by now.

Good luck.

I may be wrong but i dont think AMD did a K6 600 is this a typo or are you running a chip overclocked, as this could be the cause.

As far as I know you have to buy a K7 to get 600mhz

There are a number of software programs out there for Temp. monitoring that have to be "Calibrated" to work with certain mobo's......that could be what is causing the problem. The AMD Athalon would have already died if indeed it were running @ 223 Degrees F http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif.
