I just built a new computer system. For some reason I can't get the computer to startup from the CD Drive. In fact, It freezes up when I try to use the Win98/ME startup floppies with CD support. Everything is new and the harddrive & floppy seem to work fine. I've tried everything I can think of with cables(reversing, different ones, etc.), bios settings, etc. Can anyone please help?!?

Try disabling virus protection in bios. Hit del on starup and disable virus protection. This may help

I've tried everything! I even replaced the CD Drive with a different one and I get the same result. The bios sees the CD Drive (the green light comes on the CD when I insert one & when I first turn the computer on then it goes out and never comes back on). It just won't boot up from it, the screen freezes on the message (searching for boot record from CDROM). When I startup using a floppy my computer freezes when it tries to read the CD ROM drivers - the green light on the floppy stays on. I just ordered the mother board, could it just be a bad board?

Is your CPU fan working, I spent ages on a amchine once, every time it had got about 5mins into the installation it froze, when I took the case of I found the fan on the CPU was knackered.

Can you get to the fdisk command on your start up disk, if you are reinstalling it may be better to Fdisk /mbr and then fdisk the hdd and reformat.

Are you overclocking anything.

CPU Fan = working; I cannot startup using a disk with CDROM drivers. I can startup without CDROM drivers, my harddrive is working fine! I have no problems with it. I cannot get the CDROM drive to do anything. Won't even let me use the Win98/ME startup disk.

Check the jumpers on back of the CD ROM. If it's on an IDE channel by itself it should be Master, on a channel with a hard drive it might work best set as slave, the hard drive jumpered as Master, and the CD ROM in the middle position on the cable. Occasionally they work best set on Cable Select, but that's the exception rather than the rule.

Check BIOS, in the Standard CMOS section, and make sure it's set on Auto, and no LBA or Large setting enabled.
