Here is what I have now

CPU Athlon XP 1700

RAM 768MB of PC2100

Geforce4 4200 with 128mb ram

WD 120GB Hard drive with 8mb cashe

Just upgraded to a ASUS a7n8x motherboard.

I a looking at a faster Athlon XP but not sure how much of a difference I will see going to a 2100 or 2200. Would it be better to just wait until I am ready to get faster ram and the prices come down for the 333 FSB CPU's?

I mostly play MW4 mercs and battlefield 1942 online.

Also people ask me whats better to have 256MB of PC 133 or only 128 of DDR 266? This is for systems runing durons, and celerons.

Over all I am asking speed of the ram vs amount of ram.

Thanks for your help

Mike

Processor:

There will be a performance boost of a maximum of about 5 to 15 % and it is left to you to decide on the upgrade.

Speed Vs Space:

Your deal would depend on the applications that the systems are going to use. If memory hungry applications are being run, then you can opt for the larger RAM. If low end applications are being run then you can opt for the speeder RAM.

I really don't think moving from an Athlon 1700 to 2100 will net you any significant amount of overall system improvement. Though opinions may differ :)

I'd take the system with 256mb PC133. As soon as the 128mb system starts swapping to disk due to memory shortage, any performance advantage of the faster memory is out the window.

I agree on both counts. I would hold onto my money and go for a significantly faster chip/board combo later on. You will get very little boost for your money if you just upgrade the CPU now.

I would also go for the more RAM, but the best bet would be the 256 Meg in the DDR.
