I've got a IBM APTIVA 2270 with 190 MB RAM. I've included a dxdiag print out to provide more details of my system. The problem I am having is I needed to add a video card to my machine in order for my son to be able to play NASCAR Thunder 2003. I purchased a 64MB VooDoo 5
5500 PCI Video Card. I installed the card in an empty slot and rebooted with the monitor hooked up to the new card. When the pc gets to the desktop it displays the desktop background and nothing else. I can right click on the desktop and the pop up window pops up and click on properties, but the prperties box does not display. however if i unplug the monitor and plug into the monitor slot that is on the motherboard it works just as it did before i added the new card. How can i get my new card funtioning so that my son can play this game that he got at Christmas.
You may have to disable the video adapter built into the MB either with a MB jumper, in BIOS, or by disabling it in Device Manager to get the new video card recognized by Windows.
Once that's done, then you have to install the card's drivers.
Actually right now you have everything setup for a dual display, except you haven't configured what goes on the second monitor....hence no desktop. So you either need to do as suggested above or grab a second monitor and then split your desktop.....

SKI and MJC thank you for your replies. I have yet to do what you suggested, I have a couple of questions first. Understand, you are working with a rookie here. Other than adding RAM one other time, this is the first I've attempted anything like this. With SKI's recommendations, I assume that I need to un-install the voodoo drivers first correct? Also, if I remove the original monitor from the device manager is there any chance that I am going to not be able to bring up any display? (ok I'm a nervous rookie). Regarding what mjc said, when I have the monitor plugged into the new card ALL I get is my background. I get no start bar, no icons no nothing. If I right click it brings up the pop up menu that you normally get with right clicking on the desktop, but when you make a selection nothing happens. Thanks for your help and patience.

you can try downloading (from another PC) the latest driver for your video card and save it to a floppy ( if it doesn't fit you could use a cd). Next when oyur computer starts go into the BIOS or the F2 button or whatever it is on your computer and go to the tab (i forhet the name of it) and set it so that it starts up running the floppy (A: or whatever it is on your computer) then install the driver and reinstall as directed. then you'll have to reset the driver startup on F2 or what it is on your computer. Tell me if this works. THis is somewhat like something that happened to me just not with a video card.
There are a couple of things that need to be done, one of which is diabling the onboard video, first, then the drivers will need to be installed.
Most drivers will not install from DOS (booting to a flopy), they need to be installed in Windows.
Right now, the best thing to do is to use the monitor connected to the onboard video and then in Device manager "disable in this profile" the onboard video.

Thanks to all for your advice, especially SKI and MJC. In a private message I received the following advice on how to make the switch using the BIOS method that SKI had suggested (thanks again SKI).
some suggestions on how to install your PCI video card.
This site gives step-by-step instructions on how to do it:

My son is now happy. NASCAR Thunder 2003 beats the Super Bowl in his opinion.......
