I don't recall anything of your system specs or OS from prior posts...but this (http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q187/6/12.asp) was the first hit off of Google...maybe it's a start.

Thanks everybody. Sorry I I get long winded. I am just unwinding>
First got the error message last night (Saturday) about 11.30 pm. Finally got the computer working again at 14.30 this afternoon.
Am I the only idiot that sits for 14 hrs straight trying to sort a problem out? (Anybody got a couple of spare match sticks?) http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
What was happening was that I lost, and kept on losing all the devices in windows, ytou name it I lost it. (only 3 items left in Device manager) but in safe mode everything was showing OK. Eventually I managed to track things down to real mode drivers, which the help files said was cuased by something in MSCONFIG causing a conflict even though I had previously rem'd everthing there and in Autoexec and saw that for some reason the cache had been diabled. Re-set the BIOS to setup default nad Bios defautl abot 6 times. Each boot up showed all devices as normal
Fdisked 4-5 times formatted and re-installed win98se each time and once tried intalling over the top when one of my CD_rom drives stayed put. Last Time I Fdisked I split the drive. Re-booted with setup disk, and tried to copy from Win CD to the partition (I know nothing about DOS but spent about 2 hrs trying to figure out how to do the copy - When I eventually managed And was asked for the disk to install "BIOS Fail Safe" I just pointed to partition and sat back and bingo up and running again. Even trying to re-insert Ghost images did no good.
Who says life is dull? And believe it or not I only cursed at the computer once http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif So I will be going to your links and printing them out for future use.
