View Full Version : Boot problems after shipping

So, being the prodigal son, I decided to build up a computer for my parents. I assembled a ABIT BE6 MOBO with a slot CPU at 600mhz Celeron and 256M RAM. I added all the bells & whistles, cd-rw, whopper HDD and what not. I got the system running at my house and all was groovy. Then I shipped it cross country to NYC. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif

When they got it they took it out of the box and assembled it. Turned it on and got nothing. I thought maybe the video card came loose, so we walked through taking the thing apart to check. The husked the box and found the slot CPU dangling from the fan power wires http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif

That seemed like the root cause to me http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/cool.gif. So they plugged it in and booted up the system with the case off and everything came up. To limit damage I told him to shut down with the start menu dillie and disconnect everything then put the cover back on. When he got everything back together it will not boot all the way. It will get up to the Win98 screen splash and then go to a black screen and hang. There are no error messages.

Do you think it is still the CPU?

Thanks for the help.

Just to add.

I got the system to boot up in safe mode, but when it tries to boot up in normal mode it will go to the Win98 splash screen and then it goes to a blank screen, then the monitor shuts down.

Thanks.

Hi,

I don't have any experience with slot 1 cpu's, but you mentioned that it was "dangling" when they opened the case? Are you sure that the cpu is seated all the way and "locked" into the slot firmly?

If it boots that far, and boots into Safe Mode, I doubt if the CPU is the cause. Try scanreg and restore the registry, it sounds like more likely a corrupt file somewhere, or registry problem.

Removing hardware from Device Manager (in Safe Mode) and reinstalling it might turn out to be necessary, but I'd try scanreg first.

Use the [F8] key or hold down [Ctrl] to get a boot menu, at the C:\> prompt type scanreg_/restore using a space in place of the underscore used here. Choose a registry backup made before this started, that will replace the registry. If that doesn't work, start removing components from Safe Mode, one at a time, and reinstaling them. Get into Safe Mode the same way. I think scanreg is the best bet...
