Hi,
I have a KK-266 motherboard with an Antec-SX280 case and Athlon 1GHz./266 processor, Corsair PC-133 Cas2 256 MB. I have a cheap PCI video card (Kaser) with SiS chipset. The problem is that when I power it on, the Power On Self Test does not show up on the video. In fact, there is no signal to the video. The CPU fan connected via the mobo works fine and an LED (I do not know what it means, undocumented) on the lower left corner lights up. I do not have any other stuff installed as yet (no FD, cards etc.). Somebody asked me to try the CMOS clear ( I have yet to try it). There is no beep and no other toubleshooting aid as per the mobo vendor. I tried powering up and down at least 10 times.
What hardware should I suspect? Could the mobo be partially shorted due to contact with a standoff? I am confused. What procedure should I follow to fix this. Could it be the mobo or the video card. Please help.

install your floppy disk drive, it is a required component to boot up.

I am told by most people that I should take out equipment rather
than add stuff esp. drives. This is to try to narrow down on the
faulty component. Thanks for your advise.

To POST all that is needed is the MOBO, RAM (unless you WANT a memory error), CPU, video card and power...if you want to do anything else then you need at least the floppy drive, followed by the hard drive and then the rest. Without any drives attached you should get some sort of error saying tha no drives were found do you want to enter setup? or something like that...but POST (Power On Self Test) did its job!

It may be that the BIOS is set to use the AGP slot first, also the possiblity of a short is very real (try to power on with the board outside the case, on a non-conductive surface), and there is the possibility that one or more jumpers are not properly set (sometimes they come from the factory that way)

You better believe it mjc, I have a PcChips M596 board that came shipped new with the jumper set to clear CMOS. The directions clearly stated that you should check the setting to assure that the jumpers are set to normal mode.

I have a bias about mounting motherboards. If you check the mobo on a nonconductive surface and it works, remount the board with plastic, not metal mobo standoffs. If using screws to secure the board, use the washers between the mobo and the screws. Make sure that the ram and video are seated properly in the board.

I would try to Set Bios Defauts in the BIOS or it could say Set Minimum config. As its a PCI card, try and set Plug and Play option Yes. The advice re seeking AGP first is good but it should find the PCI slot anyway. Also try the option to Reset Config Data. If these ideas all fail, go to mobo site and check for a BIOS revision. Check all jumper settings, try the option Halt on Errors. ummm, you have got a keyboard fitted? Its not really necessary except if the Halt is not set correctly. Finally, try another video card. I hope this helps.

Sounds like the same problem only not as serve (my machine will boot if I let is cool down after I try to reboot) I have with a similar system. KK-266 with Athlon 1333 and PC-133 256 MB.

The problem presented itself while I was burning a CD. I think something got a little hotter than is should have. I am still trying to locate the problem.

That board doesn't like PCI video cards. Check out the excellent faq on that board here:
