Hi there, I posted this previously and none of the suggestions helped
here is my problem. I have a ASUS mobo CUSI - FX with a Celeron 633 cpu 64 meg ram it has intergrated video/sound chip (Sis 630E AGPset). when ever the system is powered down it does not restart, it goes through post without problems then auto detects hd (quantum 20.4gig 5400) then locks up. You have to pull the power plug and leave it out for 10 to 20 minutes before it will power up again. I have turned off the quick start up in the bios but it makes no difference......any suggestions guys.

thanks in advance

ps it is running windoze 98 se

I am unfamiliar with your previous post, so bear with me as I ask what are probably redundant questions.

Are you able to boot as far as loading windows, ie. can you boot in safe mode?

What do you mean by locking up? Any error messages? Any text displayed at all?

Try different hard drive. Drive might be bad. How long have you had it?

This is the second HD I have tried. This one is brand new. If the power has been turnd off or disconnected for 10 to 20 minutes the system fires up straight off. It is when it has to restart when you install software or if you want to get back on after you shut down that it does not want to play the game.... http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif

When it tries to restart I get the post ok 'beep' it then tries to auto detect the hd and cd which it does I then get a cursor blinking on a black screen under the detected hd/cd. I thought it might have been a short on the mobo so I installed fibre washers on both sides of all connection points to the frame without out success.

Your assistance is appreciated.

Hi,

Make sure that the hard drive jumpers are config. correctly. Is the bios detecting the hard drive as a master/slave? Does the system freeze totally, or it you let it sit for 10 seconds or so, will it continue on and start?

I suspect your machine is overheating. While the machine is on and the fan is running, it is being cooled and thereby running properly. When you shut it off, lack of ventilation is causing the already heated components to retain the heat. This would explain why it turns on after a few minutes cooling time has passed. The first thing I would try is better ventilation and cooling.

The HD works fine and is detected as master. When I transfered the old hd to the new one it picked up as slave no problems.

Running asus probe indicates the temp as a very safe 17c. What would you suggest to change the vents yawningdog?

thanks again guys and gals

Unless you are living inside of a refrigerator there is something wrong with that 17c temp (62F)...that is lower than ambient temperature, most places. Make sure that you have Asus probe configured properly ao try anothertemp monitoring program, or are you able Temp reading directly from BIOS.

Open the case, set a big fan to blow into the case. Use the coolest air you can get (turn A/C up, or do it at night if you don't have A/C). Restart. If the problem persists under these conditions, I'm probably all wet.

Update time.

I have checked out two other computers running ASUS mobo's and the temperature range for them is 20c (68f). So it would appear that the temperature reading maybe right?

I bought an assembled Celeron 800e with a cusi-m mobo (the same as the one I have in my working computer) when it is powered down (using windows shut down) then restarted it gets to the windows background screen and then stops. Using Ctrl/Alt/Del you get the task box with nothing running. If I turn the computer off using the button at the front, then turn the on/off button on the back of the power supply off and on it starts first go. I have not had this problem with my system running the same mobo.

Back to the system that is giving me grief, when it locks up it does not get to the windows stage, however if the the power plug is pulled and left for 5 seconds then re inserted it powers up no problems..........now the question is is this normal (I think not) so are these mobo's possessed. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Thanks again, I will keep you posted.

This MAY be far fetched. If this only happens when you powerdown and not on a warm boot (re-start) this may be an power manegement issue. Try to disable any power management software in the bios and in Windows.
