What may be happening is that you are not actually connected to the Internet and the pages that are appearing are those that are stored in the browser cache. I have that happen occasionally with my dialup 56k connection, and the solution for me is to just disconnect and dial the ISP again. Can you get pages to appear after trying a few reconnections?

does this happen to all sites??

what browser are we talking about?? - which version.....

what type connection?? dial up, or?

can you email??

did you install/uninstall anything??

did something happen just prior to this occuring??

if using IE, click "File".. see that it is not set to "Work Offline".

also: (for IE only) click "Tools"> Internet Options> Connection TAB.

see that is has not been accidentally set to "never connect".

sorry for all the questions.. but it can make things easier to determine your problem.

how do you know you're connected at all?? do you have any communication apps : yahoo instant mess, aim- aol instant mess, ICQ, msn, ??

do any of these work??

note:.. when I post give me at least (5) minutes to edit ( I'm a terrible typist!!) http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif

try running IE Repair Tool. Go to Control panel> add/ remove programs> highlight IE> click remove.

you will be offered choices to repair IE.

I seriously doubt you had time to try all the things I listed in my previous post.

please try things suggested, and answer our questions.. I know you are in a hurry to get this fixed. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif

I take it you hear your modem dial, and see the flashing icon appear in your task bar? the one you can double click on and it will open up a box that tells you you are connected at such and such a speed, for how long etc?

try all the things listed above- you may think you tried them.. but do so again.. then post back.

and you still have not answered all the questions.

had you tried pinging yourself in DOS?

of running "winipcfg"??

click start>run> type "winipcfg" (without the quotes)

run this while you are sure you're connected, it will tell you if you are and allot more.

It's late, I'm a zombie, and can't find anything that looks like it might help right now, but I'll look again tomorrow. For now...

Try using the blue Post Reply icon below all the posts, instead of the Reply with Quote icon at the top of an individual post, unless you have a specific reason for including the quote. Makes for a lot less scrolling and a shorter topic overall.

Thanks.

Here are some more things to check:

CALL CONNECTS BUT BROWSER CAN'T REACH ANY WEB SITES

1. Most common problem. Check under Control Panel->Network->Configuration to make sure you don't have more than one TCP/IP protocol listed to work with your Dial Up Adapter.

2. Some commercial Internet services "hard code" DNS settings for their services, which causes a conflict. Follow these instructions to suspend their settings:

Go to Control Panel->Network->Configuration.

Select TCP/IP Dial Up Adapter, then click on the "Properties" button.

Select the "DNS Configuration" folder tab. Select "Disable DNS." Then click OK.

You will be prompted to re-start your computer when you click OK to exit Control Panel->Network. You have to re-start for the new settings to take effect.
__________

What operating system are you using, and do you have an ethernet card?

Sea: What is winipcfg? Is it included in all Windows versions?

Tweetybirdfoxy: Just cuz those little puters near clock say you're connected doesn't mean you actually are. My husband "falls off the Net" a lot and his display says he is connected when he isn't. We think his problems are a software modem, but I had similar problems to you and it was a "phone" problem. Noise or interference on the phone line itself. Are they doing work on the phone lines in your area? When they "improved" our phone lines recently, we had bunches of initial problems to work through.

I know win98 has it.. for the entire story see this (http://support.morehouse.edu/winipcfg.html#1), and also THIS (http://www.tcimet.net/support/021397-005.htm) very good info.

try to run it. (note I have not tried this on a plain old dial up modem machine yet [without a NIC] so I honestly don't know if it will do anything on one. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif.)

Howdy,

Couple of things to try:

1) If you have the internet security setting on high, change it to medium.

2) If you have cookies disabled, enable them.

3) If your browser does not have 128bit encryption, get it and install it at the MS update page.

Cheers,

Big Blue 66

Hi,

I didn't see this suggested.

Make sure you don't have "Work Offline" checked under "File".

Also, go to "Tools/Synchronize". Delete anything that can be deleted, then go to "Setup" delete what can be there and disable everything you can.
That is, unless you are connected to a LAN and need these settings.

I had the same problem. When I set my system monitor to watch available memory, I would watch it go down to where there was hardly anything left, and would get the same symptoms. This worked for me.

Good Luck!!

Had the same problem last winter. Drove me banana's and made me want to walk down the road kicking rocks! Finally gave up and done a Registry restore. Bingo..... No more problem.
