Hello,

My PC is Pentium II 400 MHz with Windows 98 OS. Recently it becomes terribly slow. The symptoms are:

1. Once I move mouse, The course responds after 1 or even couple of minutes.
2. Whenever I click any icon, I have to wait several minutes to see the response.
3. The hard disk light does not flash while I am waiting.
4. times when I start the computer, the power light either flashed for the first half minutes or did not turned light for a while
5. I can not find any other heavy loaded program running in background.
6. The time seems stopping while I am waiting since every time I start the computer the time is correct but after several hours, the time showed on the computer delayed for maybe 20 or 30 minutes.

I have tried following steps,

1. I tried various antivirus tools and did kill a KAK Warm virus
but the compute was still as slow as before.
2. I reinstall the computer without format the hard disk. It did not work.
3. I format the hard disk and install the OS again and DID NOT install any other software. It worked that night when I installed OS. But next morning when I start the computer, it was as slow as before.

Now I am afraid something happened to my hardware because of the delay of time and the none response of hard disk light and some times when I start the computer, the power light either flashed for the first half minutes or did not turned light for a while. Any suggestion is appreciated.

Most of those symptoms you've described would have me believe you have a failing power supply. I would suggest you have that tested. Most good local shops will do that for free-or if you're knowledgeable enough you can replace it yourself.

Hi,

It sounds like the problem could be from a variety of causes. It is possible that the virus is still in the system, since it can attach itself to the autoexec.bat file and affect the startup disk if the autoexec.bat file is on it?? I found information on this virus at Mcafee.com at the follwing link;
http://vil.mcafee.com/dispVirus.asp?virus_k=10509&

Perhaps others can guide you on completely wiping the hard disk and starting from scratch. Of course, you may want to run a virus scan on the startup disk, or use one that you know is clean (that you did not create during the time that the virus was on the system. In other works, you may want to use a clean boot disk created w/o your machine. I know others know where to download one. The symptoms with your clock may also suggest the virus is still present, as it is dependent on activating at certain times.

Are you getting any strange error messages?

Is the machine recognizing the correct amount of ram on bootup?

What do you think folks?

Whoops! skimmed it a little too fast, didn't even see where you mentioned you had a worm! Sorry, that's what i get for trying to watch tv and surf! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/tongue.gif
I think danleff's hit upon it pretty good-all i'd say is mmake sure you get a good boot disk from someone you know that has an uninfected computer, then do an fdisk /mbr( this will erase ands reset your master boot record which a worm could have corrupted, then reset your primary partition( you can use all your hard drive space if you want) then format your hard drive and reinstall windows. Still wouldn't be a bad idea to have your power supply checked tho. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

Thanks for your reply. IISBOB. I also suspected the power supply or the CMOS battery partially failed. I once replaced the fan of my power supply one month before the computer freezed. But the strange thing is that when I start the computer with SAFE MODE, the speed is OK. Once I use NORMAL MODE, it freezes again. Could you give me further suggestion? In addition, I have checked the previous posts on this site about computer freezing. CPU overheat may not be my problem since the CPU fan running well and I have other two fans, one in power supply and one in the case cooling the circuts.

I have done the fdisk and format the hard disk and reboot and reinstall the OS through CD-ROM that might not be attacked by any virus.

Hi,

Did you use a clean boot disk?

From your last two posts, I assume that you followed iisbob's instructions, does this mean that you still have the problem?

From your description of booting into safe mode vs. normal mode, if you still have the problem, before you load any software;

Is the memory count ok on bootup?

How is the system clock?

I would run a complete scandisk and make sure that the hard drive does not have any problems.

Safe mode runs w/o many device drivers, which may point to a hardware issue.

You mentioned that the power supply fan was replaced? How old is the power supply? May want to still have it checked.

I defer to my more learned forum pals.
