Hello all,
A friend I play poker with has a Compaq PreSORRYO, intel 366 celeron, 64mb ram, Win 98. That is all of the specs I remember. The pc worked fine before she let a 5 yr old have play day on the thing. Now when you try to boot the startup mode options come up and if you choose normal mode it only makes it as far as the initial Win 98 screen and freezes. If you choose safe mode it runs a scan disc (blue screen) and takes about 15 min. When safe mode comes up there are no icons at all not even a start menu, no way to do anything. I can get into the cmos setup utility but I am out of my element I only know to reset defaults. This person has a restoration cd, would that help? She does not care about the data she just wants it up and running. Any suggestions, besides not letting a 5 yr old play on the pc? I await your knowledge.

Peace

So---You've been playing poker wih a Lady huh? http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif In this case you have an easy fix as nothing needs to be saved. Toss that restoration disk into the CD-ROM and proceed. You will have like three options. Full restore...etc. IMHO that would be best as you aren't concerned about saving any files etc. Whizz thru that and then set up your ISP account for mail and you are home free. Have an awesome day!

Before you go all out on the restore try scanreg /restore from c: you should be able to pick from 4-5 previous registry saves. Thank Pete for drilling that one in my head http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Edit: I guess I should add that you can tell the system to boot into a menu option screen by holding down the Ctrl key while booting...then select command prompt only option. If you can't get there this way enter your BIOS and make sure boot from floppy is enabled then use a good Win 98 boot disk and go from there.
