Well here's my problem:

I just built a new system and installed Windows 98 all that is good.

Now when I went to install some other software the next day I get this error message when trying to use my CD Rom:

D:/ is not accessible

A device attached to the system is not functioning

I get this message no matter what CD i install. I'm not to sure what to do next. I thought about trying a different CD Rom??? I can't do much because I need to load everything through this drive.

Any suggestions would help!!!!! Thanks in advance!!

System information:

ECS K7S5A motherboard
AMD Athlon 2000XP CPU
Seagate 80gb HD
CD Rom (from old system no idea who maker is, does not say on drive)
Windows 98 OS

My suggestion would be for you to "post" what diagnostics you have already tried.
Then we ask you to try things you haven't.....

For starters, how to you know the CD is still drive "d"?

The BIOS screen at boot up should "flash" a message as to the brand and type--- if the CD is connected correctly.....

As far as trouble shooting I have not done much yet. I was at a loss of what to do. I just got done with building my PC and loading my OS and I thought I was home clear and now this.

The Cd rom seems to recognize what is in their because when I go to "my computer" the D: drive is labeled with the name of the CD that is installed in the drive. Then I double click on it and then shows all the files that it contains. I double click on the "setup" file and that is when I get the error message

D:/ is not accessible

and I never hear the CDrom spinning before getting this error message.

When I go to "My Computer" it show the CD Rom as D: ALSO, when i installed my OS the boot disk I used did not have Ramdrive so that did not take letter D: which would of put my CD Rom at drive letter E:

Seeing that this is a new build, I would recommend that you get back inside the case and make sure that the drive is jumpered correctly, (master, slave, etc.) make sure that you have the drive plugged into the right connection on the IDE cable, and if that doesn't clear it up, try a new IDE cable.

Make sure the power plug is fully seated in the drive. Maybe try a different power connector.

Hope it helps...:)

Also, I would check in Device Manager and see if there is any problem noted with the CD drive or anything else. You may need to Remove the CD and then reinstall it. If you do that, it is probably best to do it in Safe Mode.

Change the cable that you are currently using for the CD-ROM Drive and see if it works. If it doesn't you may need to clean the lense of your CD-ROM Drive. Try with a lense cleaner CD first and if unsuccessful you have to open the CD-ROM Drive, locate the lense and wipe it with a lint free cloth.
