I have been given a machine to look at that doesn't get to post..............well it does under unusual conditions.

The Mainboard looks like an itx board, no slots everything onboard (graphics VIA Pc100, sound, network). It has K6-2 450hz processor and 32mb ram.

I disconnected the CD - HD ( on the same ribbon ) and the floppy drive, this made no difference. The power led and CPU fan both work but l couldn't hear any beeps. I changed the memory to the other slot and used a different stick, l removed and refitted a good battery no change.

After resetting the CMOS, using the jumper on the board and the mains lead still plugged into the PSU, their was no change. Only when l unplugged the mains lead and reset the cmos jumper then plugged in the mains lead did l manage to get to post. Thinking everything was sorted l adjusted the Cmos, saved and exited, only to hear the slight click of the monitor as the screen went blank again.
I went through the procedure again, at the post screen l didn't adjust the Cmos. I pressed F1 to resume and it booted to Windows no problem. When l shut down and started again the usual problem occurred.

I would try a different PSU, but it is not a common one. Is about ¼ the normal size and only has a 6 pin connector block coming from it to the board. The floppy and CD-HD plug into the board.

Do you think that the PC ( a Patriot PBK 450/1 ) needs a new PSU or is their something else l should check?

TIA

Fran

I was having a bit of trouble with what you were or weren't doing to the CMOS...:(

What happens when you just set it to the default values?

Try changing the CMOS battery....it sounds like the values are changing every time you lose power.

l removed and refitted a good battery no change.

Seems he might have tried that...

Sorry for the confusion Whyzman,
When l change the jumper on the board to reset the CMOS to default values AND the mains lead is plugged out the machine will Post, after plugging it back in of course.

If l then make changes, eg date, time then save and exit, the machine doesn't reboot. l just get a blank screen.
If l reset the jumper again and don't enter the bios and press F1 to resume, it boots to Windows OK, but if l try to reboot after closing down, l get a blank screen with no post or beeps.

I have changed the battery to one that gives 3v across faces.

Cheers
