Hello: Tried to copy and paste me Desktop Icons to Word Pad Doc, but it would not take WHY! I want to duplicate or somehow print out my Desktop to send some one by e-mail! Why didn't the copy and paste routine work? Can some one help me on this? I am using Windows 98SE Thank You

You can take a "picture" of your desktop, if you will hit the "print screen" key while viewing your desktop. Then open Word or e-mail, right click, and paste.
The Print screen key doesn't print, it only copies what is on your screen.

also I use PrintKey2000v 5.10 (http://newlife-win98.server101.com/printkey_info.htm).
This is the free version (often the best) I use it all the time, nice exact screenshots, simply Press -Prnt screen/sysrq and a mirror image is instantly there that you can name, click, save, send,or print to wherever you want.
love that freeware..

Bailey: I just tried what you suggested..and I can't get it to paste into a message window for email. I don't think that "should" work because it is a bitmap file, but it did paste into WordPad..which, frankly, blew me away. Have tried getting bitmaps to go into WordPad before without success. Paint has always worked, but one needs to resize some before printing or emailing.
Good link, Sea! Thank you. All this time I have been going through the Capture feature of my PaintShopPro..the program you're using looks loads easier.

I think your right Kay. I mis-spoke about e-mail. But you can open a new word document and paste there. I do that a lot at work. Thanks for the correction. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif.
Thanks for the link Sea. I'll give that freeware a try.

try it iisbob.. just pressing the print screen button actually does nothing.. with this the capture "leaps" to the forefront of the screen where you can edit it, print or whatever...no cut, copy crap.
it's actually an improvement over the manual way of doing it.

Okay, did some experimenting this morning. I can do a PrintScreen and then paste into WordPad, click on Send under the File menu and it brings up an email message window with the .doc as an attachment. BUT is 1.04 MB which is too big. I can paste into Paint, but I can't save it there as anything other than a bitmap. Bitmap is 1.37 MB...even worse. Can select Stretch/Skew under Image in Paint, resize by 50 per cent, and then Insert into email message...still at 483 K...so still too big. Checked Imaging in 98, no option to save as a jpeg.
Bottom line is that I do not know of any way to jpeg the file (for email) unless you have some sort of scanner software or PrintShop kind of program. Maybe someone else will have an idea? Or, you may have to snail mail a print of your Desktop instead of email.

When you sre viewing you image in Paint. You can go to File, click on Save as, and there will be option for the file name and a drop down below that marked Save as file type. Should be options there for saving as jpg, gif, ect.

Bailey: Just checked again to be sure, but the only options in Win98 Paint under the Save As are several kinds of bitmaps. 16 colors, 256 colors, and 24 bit. No jpegs.

I am totally awed by your ability to do this kind of thing, and I LOVE the DragonWar pic...but, I do not have any jpeg or Gif options in the drop down box. Is it possible that you got those options with an office app? Some office apps allow you to edit a bitmap in Paint and then revert back to the document you are working on...so?
Bailey

iis has the same options that I have. They may be a pert of MS Office. I don't know.
But I do a lot of screen shots here at work. Cheer up Sea. I hear you. I will try your freeware.
I'm all for something that is easier to use.

you know Kay, that thought never occured to me?! I do have MS office2000 premium installed-i suppose that could have enhanced my Paint program; i'll have to check into that. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif
SEA, i wasn't ignoring you-and it does look like a great program, just that i'm already kinda knee deep in graphics programs now, and from simple paint to PSP all the area's of graphic editing are pretty much covered. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/cool.gif Though i will keep that prog, 'cuase it does look promising and i may find it useful at another time. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

Why don't you try Microangelo. It's a neet program to create desktop icons and also has a neat snapshot utility built in and you can capture any pictures and then shrink it into it's palette (which i does automatically for you) do a search (it's freeware). I stil haven't found a better program to match it.

I'm sorry. I want to make a correction. Microangelo is actually shareware. If you do decide to try it, make sure you look for the studio version.
