I would try the new memory in the slot that has the 128 right now. If that works, I would try the 128 in the next slot or another if it doesn't work there. If you have only 2 slots, it is possible that one is not working. Also, I would make sure the second slot is not dusty since this can interfere with function.

thank you for your respond...i have tested by taking the old 128 ram out and replace it with the new 256 mb ram itself...result received..constantly beep and computer would not start... could it be i have the wrong type of RAM? because the original ram that was on the mobo has chip on both side of the ram..and the one i just bought has chip on only one side. description: SDRAM PC133 168 DIMM ..sorry im really new to coputer? still learning

Your computer is designed to take a 256MB memory module.
Perhaps the one you have is either bad, or it's not compatible with your system.
Go to www.crucial.com and enter your computer's make and model.
The crucial search engine will then recommend the memory modules that will work with your system.

defjam,

Not sure that it matters that you are trying to use PC133.

I thought the standing rule on memory was that you can't go slower than the board supports, in this case you couldn't run PC66, if the board supports PC100. The PC133 should work, you may have problems mixing two speeds, but it should work by itself.

I could be mistaken, but I've never had a problem doing this myself.

defjam,

I agree you should replace the 256 module and your right going with the PC100 would be best because that would eliminate the possibility of speed being the issue.

I thought I'd go ahead and post back to give you this link. (http://docs.us.dell.com/docs/Systems/opgx110/en/ug/messages.htm#system_beep_codes) It's from Dell's sight and lists error messages and beep codes for your OptiPlex GX110. Might come in handy if you still have problems.

Good Luck and let us know!

PC133 RAM sticks are downward compatible, so that isn't the problem. It sounds like you have a bad stick of RAM, so I would exchange it, but you can still get PC133.

I went back and exchanged with a new pc 133 still it didnt work so finally exchanged with pc 100 128mb and it work.. i guess there must be some type of jumper swith that i must change on my mobo..in which i didnt know but oh well...just thought i drop by and post my result...and thank for all your respond

There shouldn't be any jumpers or anything else. RAM sticks work in a downward compatible manner if the are the right kind of RAM for the board. If your's didn't work, it shouldn't be because of the potential speed (PC133) of the RAM, but because either the RAM was bad or something is really strange about your board.

FWIW, I've also encountered situations where PC133 SDRAM did not work with MB's designed for PC100 SDRAM, and all of the PC133's design parameters were identical to those for PC100.

I have found that going into the BIOS and turning off SPD for the RAM sometimes helps to prevent these "conflicts".
