View Full Version : Problem transferring from old computer
Hello -
I'm having trouble transferring a program from Windows 98 to Windows XP. I have a CR-RW that has worked with other programs.
On Win98, if I click on desktop, I drag only the shortcut. Ok - so then I bring up the full program - and I'm not sure where to click in order to drag it onto the E drive. Nothing seems willing to be dragged.
Same thing when I go to My Computer and C drive.
Help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! Ray.

Most programs need to be "installed" and cannot really be "transfered" from one puter to another, but I have a little Taipei game that I recently "copied" from one puter to the next, and the little Cookie Manager program too. But both of those are little programs that didn't need to be installed..and have no files in the Common folder and such. All I had to do was copy the contents of a folder to a floppy and then to the new puter, and then make a shortcut to the exe file. What kind of program are you trying to transfer?
Hello Kay!
You came to my rescue once before.
I have TaxCut2001 installed on my Win98. I thought I had a backup on a floppy (A drive). But when I tried to recover it yesterday, I had apparently only backed up the shortcut.
I no longer have the installation disk (since I thought I had the backup)
So I went to my old Win98 and tried to copy the program onto a CD-RW. But I got the sad results I have listed below.
Object would be to transfer all that data from last year onto TaxCut 2002, now loaded into my WinXP.
Suggestions? Thanks so much. Ray.

So..the program is already installed onto XP puter, and what you want is to get last year's files transfered? Umm..can you find them listed in the program in the 98 puter? Like in any of the TaxCut folders in Windows Explorer? If so, you might be able to copy the data files onto floppy and then try opening them in TaxCut 2002, or putting them into the same folder inside TaxCut. At work, my husband has a program that saves the data within the program, and not really "separate" (like txt files or doc files)..but fortunately has some sort of backup data in the Common Files folder. So, my husband can copy the Common Files "file" to the tape drive, and then copy the files to the Common Files folder in the other puter, and have the files somehow show up in the other WinFuel program. We're still sorta baffled on why that works, but it does. The first method offers a better chance for success, probably..and less risk..because my husband is transfering to the same OS.
Hello again Kay!
Looks as though you have helped me again. The clue was "Windows Explorer" - I had forgot that I needed to go there - in order to copy onto the CD-RW. That worked nicely - and I was finally able to stick the 2001 data into the 2002.
Thank you so much!!
Ray.
